Seventeen-year-old pianist Alina Duan’s American debut at the renowned Irvine Barclay Theatre drew an audience of over 700 attendees, showcasing her exceptional talent, technical proficiency, and remarkable courage. Taking on a complex solo recital at such a young age is a feat rarely attempted, but Alina’s performance demonstrated maturity beyond her years and a fearless dedication to her craft.

Her program featured five challenging works by Bach, Chopin, Beethoven, and Tan Dun, each requiring a deep understanding of both technical intricacies and emotional nuances. Alina began with Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in G Major, capturing the clarity and structural complexity characteristic of Bach’s polyphonic style. Transitioning to Chopin’s Revolutionary Étude, she impressed with her dynamic control and mastery over rapid passagework, setting a powerful tone for the evening.

Chopin’s Scherzo No. 2 in B-flat Minor highlighted her sensitivity and control, balancing drama and refinement. Dr. Barry Tan, Piano Assistant Professor at Pepperdine University, praised her “powerful and contrasting dynamics” in the Scherzo and noted her “beautifully shaped melodies.” He remarked, “Her interpretation displayed maturity beyond her years, and the pacing was poised and thoughtful.”

Alina’s exploration of Tan Dun’s Eight Memories in Watercolor added contemporary vibrancy to the recital. Dr. Tan commended her “evocative playing” and “rich colors,” emphasizing her seamless flow between movements. “This performance showed a remarkable understanding of tone and dynamic sensitivity,” he added, “qualities that reflect her potential as a future star.”
