Artist Weekly: Oscar, can you briefly introduce yourself and your journey into the world of photography?

Oscar: Certainly. I’m Oscar Zifang Wan, a passionate visual storyteller. My journey into the world of photography began in my teens, a time when I was captivated by the raw emotions that a single photograph could convey. As the years unfolded, my love for the craft transformed into a mission to spotlight sustainability and environmental themes – narratives that I believe are some of the most crucial of our time. It wasn’t a straightforward path; it was marked by challenges and learning curves. However, every snapshot I took refined my perspective. Today, my camera isn’t just a tool; it’s a conduit for change.

Artist Weekly: Who or what were your biggest influences growing up that led you to pursue photography as a medium of expression?

Oscar: My biggest influence was undoubtedly my father. He’s been a tireless advocate for producing zero-carbon food and steering society towards a greener future. Our visits to farms exposed me to the intricate processes of sustainable agriculture, where I witnessed the remarkable efforts of individuals to embrace biogas and responsibly manage animal waste. These experiences shaped my understanding of sustainability and inspired me to capture the stories of those working towards a sustainable world. My photography became a medium to echo my father’s message, showcasing the beauty and resilience of sustainability.

Artist Weekly: How would you describe your own style and approach to photography?

Oscar: I often describe my style as ‘introspective realism.’ I’m driven to capture moments in their purest form while uncovering the deeper narratives beneath each shot. This sometimes involves waiting for hours or days, revisiting locations to capture the perfect scene that encapsulates the story I want to tell. In this process, I’ve encountered skeptical glances from those who find it challenging to adopt sustainable practices. But I understand the resistance and hesitations. Each photograph I take is a call for patience, understanding, and hope. Through my lens, I aim to gently promote the concept of sustainability and catalyze meaningful change.

Oscar: From the very inception of this exhibition, my intention was clear: to instill an ethos of ‘carbon-smart, live greener’ in every visitor. This vision was embodied in the exhibition’s elements, even down to the eco-friendly materials used for the invitations. I envision visitors leaving with a sense of empowerment, realizing that every action, no matter how small, contributes to a greener world. Sustainability isn’t just about big gestures; it’s rooted in our daily choices.

Artist Weekly: Is there a particular piece in this exhibition that holds special significance for you?

Oscar: The piece that resonates deeply with me is “Landscape Unplugged.” Its inception occurred during an unexpected electricity outage. Stripped of digital distractions, I ventured outside and was struck by the raw beauty of nature. The piece also pays homage to those who live traditionally, away from the allure of modern tech, appreciating the nuances of nature daily. As we advance in the age of technology, “Landscape Unplugged” reminds us not to lose sight of the natural world.

Oscar: Absolutely. Before the exhibition, I ventured into the digital realm. Drawing from my completion of MIT’s Data Science Machine Learning program and my Python experience, I’m designing an app named “Red Green Blue.” It focuses on the environmental impact of our daily habits, making sustainability tangible and actionable for everyone. Small changes in our routines can lead to a significantly greener society.

Stelios Mormoris, a man of many talents and boundless creativity, will unveil his debut collection of poetry, “The Oculus.” With poems that possess a unique muscular power, Stelios invites readers to peer through the lens of his words and explore the rich vistas that surround us all. In his poetic realm, the ordinary transforms into the extraordinary, as humble everyday objects ascend to the divine, while the divine itself is humbled and humanized.

Born in New York and living most of his life in the vibrant city of Paris, Stelios Mormoris spent much of his life working as an executive in the beauty industry. Now, as the Chief Executive Officer of Scent Beauty, Inc., he brings the same creative energy to perfumes and fragrances as he does to his poetry. But Stelios is far from a one-dimensional artist. He studied architecture at Princeton University and later earned his MBA from INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France.

Beyond the boardrooms and scent labs, Stelios has generously lent his time and expertise to several organizations, serving on the boards of the French Cultural Center of Boston, ACT-UP, Historic New England, and The Fragrance Foundation. As if that weren’t enough to fill his plate, he’s also a contemporary artist renowned for his abstract oil paintings.

Stelios’s interests span far and wide, from the adrenaline of rugby to the serenity of sailing and gardening. Yet, at the core of it all, his passion for reading and writing poetry remains unwavering.

“The Truth About Horses”: A Tale of Equine Enchantment

But the evening doesn’t stop with Stelios Mormoris. Sharing the stage is another talented scribe, Christy Cashman, who will be presenting her recently published book, “The Truth About Horses.” In this enchanting work, Cashman takes readers on a ride through the world of these magnificent creatures, exploring the profound connection between humans and horses.
