War Survivor Turned Award-Winning Musician – An Overview of Lebanese-Ukrainian Composer Johnny Hachem’s Journey

War can be tough for anyone; the mere experience of living through the sounds of explosions and gunshots every day can haunt you for the rest of your life. Often, the fear never leaves your head, and you have to live the rest of your life with the haunting memories of bloodshed and violence. But just like they say, on the darkest night, the brightest stars shine; there are some fearless people who not only make it through these tough times but do it with so much determination and grace that the whole world sees it. These extraordinary individuals fight against all the odds and learn to co-exist with their circumstances, making the most out of them. They go on to become living inspirations to thousands of people all around the world. One such person is the Lebanese-Ukrainian composer and pianist Johnny Hachem.

Hachem had a passion for music since he was a kid. His earliest memory of loving music came from his own parents. His mother used to play the piano while his father played the violin. He loved hearing them, especially when they played together. He fondly remembers how profoundly touched he was when he first heard them play together. That was the beginning of his love for music. This love deepened when a piano teacher started visiting his home to teach his elder sister. He would often eavesdrop from afar and try to play afterwards. He would listen to the music of the German composer Richard Wagner, which brought him immense joy.

Unfortunately, his love for music was hindered by his uneasy childhood. Hachem’s life took a drastic turn when the Lebanese war started. As gunshots rang across the city of Lebanon, Hachem found it difficult to concentrate on his studies and do everyday activities, let alone practice music. But music was his dream, his passion, he had to find a way to pursue it, and so he did.

Hachem started playing the piano even if he had to snuggle up at home during the ceasefire. No matter how difficult circumstances got, his love for music kept flourishing. He never let anything stop him. Looking back at his troubling childhood, Hachem recalled an incident, “I remember the day when a shell hit the building in which we were living, and the walls and windows were shattered. I was injured at that time, but I survived by the grace of God. The journey was never easy, but I wanted to become a professional musician no matter what it cost me.” It was this determination that made him stronger and ultimately helped him achieve his life-long goal.

Today, after years of persistent struggle, Johnny Hachem holds many international awards, including the 2009 International Award for Music Composition at The International Composition Conference (Cergy-Pontoise, France) and the 2021 third prize of the Classic Pure Vienna International Composition Competition (Vienna, Austria). Hachem has over 20 years of experience playing solo instruments, chamber music as well as orchestras. His compositions have been performed on multiple stages all around the world by different symphony orchestras, inspiring people of all ages and ethnicities. What makes his music stand out the most is the fact that it’s a perfect blend of Neo-romanticism with some modernistic elements. It is inspired by real-life stories from his past or the dreams that he has for his future. Because his music is so authentic, it connects with people immediately. Talking about one of his favorite pieces, The Battle of Siddim, Hachem explained, “It is a story that took place in the Old Testament thousands of years ago in the Valley of the Siddim. I spent time in this area trying to imagine what that battle would’ve looked like. I tried to live it through my imagination and visualize all the details. And then, when I felt truly connected, I started writing this piece of music.”

Hachem has come a long way from surviving the war, like a hero, at a very early age to becoming an internationally recognized musician. Seeing the horror of war up close, he truly understands the consequences it can have on the lives of people, especially children. To help ease this pain for many families, Hachem supports humanitarian causes in Lebanon and Ukraine. In fact, when the war started again in Ukraine a few months ago, he dedicated all his musical activities towards helping refugees.

The year 2013 marked the publication of NRBARZ’s debut album under his former moniker Barz Noble, “Symphonic Signatures,” produced by fellow Bahamian music producer & engineer Zoltan Johnson. The album was successful in garnering six nominations from the Caribbean Gospel Music Awards and received national acclaim through various media channels and news publications alike. Since then, NRBARZ has continued to record and released the follow up full length to “Symphonic Signatures “ entitled S.C.O.A.P (Soul Chapters Of A Poetic), which is produced by another Bahamian born producer and multi-instrumentalist Hashaun Adderley with co-production duties from Zoltan Johnson, Todd Marshall, including NRBARZ’s recent release, T.S.I.R (The Struggle Is Real) LP produced by Hashaun Adderley with feature production from also the aforementioned including additional production by Ejay Sargent , Gerald “PC” Bain, & Christopher “Sketch” Carey respectively. Through the album, the artists offer ten seamless melodic blends, including “Can I,” “The Struggle is Real,” “Life By The Stage,” “Sumthn,” “Around The Blend,” “Beatin Up Your Gum”, “Struttin,” “Let It Go,” “More Than Just Before,” and “Face To Face.” The album speaks to the universality of human experience by describing the myriad of hardships we all face.

Born in the Bahamas on the Island of New Providence, NRBARZ was raised by his single mother and had a both humble and fruitful childhood as he would describe it. He grew up in Nassau, Bahamas listening with to musical compositions by renowned artists such as the T-Connection, Vanessa Bell Armstrong, Ray Goodman, to the likes of Black Star, Common,Grits, Cross Movement, Deepspace 5 & Tunnel Rats on the hip-hop side of things. He graduated from the University of Bahamas, formerly the College of the Bahamas.

US Army Veteran Timothy Colbert-Kemp Wields the Power of Passion and Resilience to Serve as an Inspiration

At any point in our lives, we have perpetually admired those who have dedicated their lives to the service of the people. However, there is a price for being called a hero. Members of the army, for instance, have had to fight battles, including the silent ones that they face even after duty calls. Timothy Colbert-Kemp is one such personality who is intimately privy to these challenges, and he intends to overcome them all and share his experiences with others. Through the power of music, film, and entertainment, this talented hero is on his way to transforming his vision of a better world into action.

As a United States Army veteran, Timothy Colbert-Kemp has had to overcome trials of his own, leading him to explore more ways to combat the silent battles he faces every day. So, upon finishing his stint with the US Army, he took it upon himself to find a coping mechanism that best suited him. When he found his passion for art, Colbert-Kemp vowed to use and share it with those who had suffered a similar fate.

“After putting my life on the line every day for a year in Afghanistan, I decided that if I survived, I would make something amazing for myself,” shared Colbert-Kemp.

The path to establishing himself in the realms of music and entertainment was not easy, but Timothy Colbert-Kemp was determined to translate his vision into reality. For this reason, he has managed to formulate tracks that mash hip hop with pop, offering a new and ethereal approach to music that delivers hard-hitting bangers. It also features 80s-inspired synth tones, giving some sort of a retro vibe to each track. His album, The Hollywood Callback, seamlessly emphasizes his unique approach to music, which his listeners refer to as ear candy. His works may be reminiscent of Drake, Jay-Z, Mac Miller, and Logic, but Colbert-Kemp has added a unique flair to his music that leaves the audience wanting more.

Over the years, Timothy Colbert-Kemp has developed into a multi-talented personality who is mainly known in various industries as The Amazing T.k. In fact, this musician has been able to create and release a video game through The Amazing T.k. LLC. and is also set to appear in an upcoming film.

Although his accomplishments have made him a promising figure in the industry, The Amazing T.k. reiterates that his purpose of succeeding is to serve as an instrument of transformation for those veterans suffering from trauma. “I’m determined to help other veterans once I am in a better position to do so,” he shared. “In the meantime, I want my story to inspire those in need of a boost,” he added.

As this veteran continues to pursue all forms of art with passion and dedication, Timothy Colbert-Kemp serves as a genuine attestation that anyone can climb out of a seemingly endless trench. In the coming years, he aims not only to serve as an inspiration but also to lend a helping hand to those in need.
