The Melodic Verses of James Miller: A Journey Through Walkways

In the heart of Delaware, where the whispers of creativity and the echoes of profound thought meld with the rhythm of the days, James Miller emerges once more onto the literary scene. With a pen that dances as gracefully over pages as his compositions do through air, Miller has unfurled his latest poetic masterpiece, “Walkways,” to an eagerly awaiting audience. This collection comes on the heels of his acclaimed work, “Shell Songs,” published by White Violet Press, cementing his reputation not just as a poet but as a visionary whose works transcend the conventional boundaries of art.

James Miller’s journey into the realms of poetry began amidst the scholarly halls of the University of Wisconsin, Madison. It was there, within its English department, that he first nurtured his talent for weaving words into tapestries of emotion and insight. Pursuing his passion with unrelenting dedication, Miller honed his craft through rigorous academic training, achieving a Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing followed by a Master of Fine Arts at New York University. His works have since found homes in numerous prestigious journals and publications across both domestic and international landscapes.

However, it is not just through words on paper that Miller communicates his rich inner world. As a singer-songwriter, he extends his poetic sensibilities into melodies and harmonies that resonate deeply with all who listen. His music—a fusion of poetic narrative and acoustic elegance—can be discovered on various platforms including Soundcloud, YouTube, Bandcamp, and his personal website (www.jamesmillerarts.com/), offering a multi-dimensional experience of his artistic expression.

“WALKWAYS,” released under Bookbaby’s banner, stands as a testament to Miller’s evolving mastery over verse. Unlike any ordinary collection of poems, it serves as an odyssey through life’s myriad landscapes—both literal and metaphorical. Embracing traditional forms without being shackled by them allows Miller to delve into themes with depth, conviction, and undeniable beauty. From free verse explorations celebrating nature’s majesty to poignant reflections on human existence touched by divine understanding; each poem is a beacon guiding readers toward transcendence.

Miller’s unique ability to blend memory with tender affection forms the wellspring from which this collection draws its strength. Walking along shorelines or tuning one’s ear to the symphony of waves becomes more than mere observation—it transforms into spiritual communion; pathways not only to love but towards an encompassing love for God.

Critics have lauded “WALKWAYS” for its nuanced approach to emotionality and technique. Nancy Mellichanp Savo from The Lyric praised how “a deep breath in while reading James Miller’s Shell Songs invites the briny sea air in while images cascade in waves.” Meanwhile Pino from Rotary Dial highlighted Miller’s subtle craftsmanship in rhyming and scanning without detracting from poetry’s true essence: raw emotion. His works navigate themes like love and loss without descending into sentimentality; instead presenting layered meanings akin to Emily Dickinson’s famed slant style yet remaining accessible.

Indeed what sets James Miller apart is not merely his adeptness at conjuring imagery or evoking emotions but doing so while maintaining a conversational tone that infuses rhyme and meter with an authenticity seldom achieved in written form.

As we traverse through “WALKWAYS,” we are invited not just to observe but to feel; not merely to read but also reflect upon our connections with nature, humanity, spirituality—and ultimately ourselves. In this collection lies an invitation: To explore paths less trodden within our souls guided by James Miller’s lyrical compass.

This anticipated release promises more than just another assortment of poems; it offers solace for those adrift in contemplation and joy for seekers after beauty—in all its splendid variances.

James Miller continues to sparkle within our literary constellation—not just as another star—but as a luminary guiding us towards deeper understanding beyond our shores’ limits.

Interview with Xue Sun: How Cross-Disciplinary Design Power and Creativity Shape the Future

By: Max Blue

In today’s digital era, design is not just a display of visual arts; it has become a powerful tool for conveying information, inspiring emotions, and fostering change. In this creative domain, some designers touch hearts and provoke deep social reflection through their work. Xue Sun(shelly), a designer from China, has shown how design can transcend visual boundaries to become a force for changing the world.

During an interview with New York Weekly staff, Shelly shared her journey of breaking traditional boundaries in the design field, her design philosophy, and her expectations for the future of design.

Hello, Shelly, it’s a pleasure to speak with you today. What does your cross-cultural journey from China to the United States mean to you?

For me, moving from China to the United States was a significant challenge and a wonderful life experience. I came over alone at 15, without the company of parents or friends. Despite the worries and anxieties, I was curious and eager about the future and embarked on my educational journey. This experience taught me a lot, allowing me to experience a different teaching style than in China. I became more mature, brave, and confident, which I consider a valuable experience. This cross-national experience helped me appreciate different cultural differences, habits, and the value of interacting and learning from friends, teachers, and classmates from different countries, respecting different customs and cultures, broadening my horizons, and making myself a better person. Now, having gradually integrated into the United States, I enjoy and am accustomed to the lifestyle here and hope to become a useful member of society.

How have your studies at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) and Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) influenced your design philosophy?

At MICA, where I completed my undergraduate degree in Graphic Design, I learned about various design fields, mastering typography and font design, as well as practical aspects like packaging and advertising design. I also became proficient in using different design software. After mastering graphic design skills, I thought it would be beneficial to add illustration skills to my repertoire, combining graphic design and illustration to make my work more commercial and practical. At SCAD, I chose to specialize in illustration, allowing me to design anything I wanted, from packaging to logos and advertisements. I frequently managed to produce designs that met client expectations. I even created my own studio’s logo, inspired by my cat, for different packaging designs, which is very meaningful to me.

Could you share the inspiration behind your work that won the 2023 NEW YORK TOP International Illustration Award?

The theme of my entry was parallel universes because I believe imagination is crucial for a designer. I wanted to challenge my imagination and creativity through this competition and depict the beautiful world I’ve always anticipated and admired. In my heart, there’s always been a world inhabited by angelic children with pure hearts and innocent smiles, fluttering their wings and living joyfully. This has always been my vision of a perfect world, free from troubles and filled with harmony. My design inspiration came from this world I envisioned within my heart, featuring adorable angel children, flying dogs, giraffes parading through the clouds, and corals and seaweeds growing in the sky, all embodying joy and strength. This illustration, titled “Flying in a Wonderful World,” won the competition, and I hope more people will appreciate my design. I aim to work harder to create even better works.

What creative and technical challenges did you face while preparing for the MUSE Design Award-winning project, and how did you overcome them?

We won the MUSE Design Award for our TangiBand project. As part of the design team, I learned many professional skills and enhanced our teamwork. After relentless trials and planning, we successfully implemented our design. TangiBand is a gamified music education app aimed at providing meaningful assistance in daily life. Our target audience was children, as there are plenty of apps for adults who generally have good planning and life skills. Children, however, require more support to pursue their interests. Our design concept was to make music accessible to children of all conditions equally. Supported by augmented reality and AIoT technology, the product offers an intuitive, engaging, natural, and inspiring way for children to learn music. They can build different shapes with blocks, assign the best sound quality to these shapes, and then use these shapes as musical components to create a song. TangiBand allows users to learn music in a fun way, anytime, anywhere, without needing musical instruments. We hope to help children discover their musical talents.

Looking to the future, do you have any plans or aspirations?

In the future, I aspire to become an outstanding designer. I plan to create more packaging and advertising designs, my two favorite design fields. I hope my designs will never disappoint all the clients who trust and choose me. Additionally, I wish to attract more pet brands or philanthropic design projects. I’ve always loved cats and dogs since I was young. Growing up, I had a black puppy and now have two cats who are like family to me. My design website features many cat and dog-themed designs, one of my favorite subjects. I hope my designs will one day increase societal attention to cats and dogs, encouraging more people to care for them and not abandon them. I also hope to earn a lot of money one day, part of which I’ll donate to shelters and aid for cats and dogs, as well as other charitable causes. Although I’m already doing this, I know that becoming a better person will enable me to do even more.

Javier Laos Photography: Mastering the Art of Light Across Genres

In the world of photography, versatility is not just a skill—it’s an art form. It demands an eye for detail, a passion for exploration, and an innate ability to tell stories through lenses. Javier Laos, a name synonymous with such artistic versatility, has carved a niche in the realm of photography that transcends traditional boundaries. From the evocative transformation of museums to the electrifying rush of rollercoasters, from the delicate essence of gourmet cuisines to the bold statements of fashion boutiques, Laos has captured it all. His mantra, “creating with light,” is not just a phrase but a philosophy that illuminates every frame he crafts.

At Bazement Studio, where creativity meets light, Javier Laos has embarked on journeys across diverse photographic terrains. His work spans capturing landmarks undergoing significant transformations—like documenting the metamorphosis of the Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla or and the old San Diego Tribune building into AMP&RSAND Office campus— to seizing the adrenaline-pumping moments at SeaWorld’s Emperor Rollercoaster. Yet his lens does not stop at monumental sights; it delves into the culinary artistry at restaurants such as Shiku Sushi and The Tequila Factory in Old Town, as well as capturing the essence of both Italian fashion at Passione Boutique and urban trends at Trending & Tipsy Boutique.

What sets Javier apart is not just his ability to navigate through different photographic genres but his profound understanding of light as both a medium and message. “Creating with light,” as echoed by his brand’s motto at Bazement Studio, signifies more than mere illumination—it encapsulates mood, texture, emotion, and narrative within each shot.

Capturing Culinary Delights

Javier’s work in photographing restaurants like Dini’s Bistro, Shiku Sushi, and others showcases his prowess in food photography—a genre that requires an acute sense of color balance and composition to make each dish leap off the page (or screen). Through his lens, viewers can almost taste the exquisite flavors and feel the ambiance of each location. Each photograph tells a story beyond what meets the eye; it’s about capturing moments that invite viewers into an experience.

Architectural Elegance Frozen in Time

The documentation of architectural landmarks undergoing transformation is no small feat. It requires patience and precision to capture both macro views and intricate details over time. For instance, photographing La Jolla’s Museum of Contemporary Art’s transformation isn’t merely about snapping before-and-after shots; it involves understanding architectural essence and conveying its evolution through imagery that speaks volumes. His architectural range is also shown on his work in Puerto Rico, where photographed the visitor center in El Yunque,, as well  as residential and hospitality projects for Interlink.

Thrills Caught Mid-Air

Photographing dynamic subjects like SeaWorld’s Emperor Rollercoaster presents unique challenges—from timing to framing high-speed action without losing focus on storytelling elements. Such images are powerful because they freeze moments of thrill and joy that are inherently ephemeral—the essence of what makes roller coasters so exhilarating.

Fashion Forward Frames

In fashion photography—whether highlighting Italian elegance at Passione Boutique or urban chic at Trending & Tipsy—Javier navigates changing trends with timeless techniques. His photographs do more than showcase attire; they encapsulate narratives around style identity and self-expression framed within diverse urban landscapes.

This multifaceted approach reveals more than just technical prowess; it reflects a deep commitment to engaging audiences across varied interests—from art aficionados and architecture enthusiasts to food lovers and fashionistas, to product brands.

Engagement with viewers extends beyond visual narratives; it weaves into social connections fostered by platforms like Instagram (@Javilaosphoto) (@bazement.studio) and Facebook (facebook.com/JavierLaosPhotography/BazementStudio). Through these channels, Javier invites audiences into behind-the-scenes glimpses and conversations around creative processes—a testament to how modern photographers blend artistic creation with community engagement.

As we explore Javier Laos Photography’s expansive portfolio hosted on Bazementstudio.com, it becomes evident that versatility is not merely about mastering different genres but weaving them together through a unique artistic vision centered around light. In doing so, Javier does not just capture images; he crafts stories that resonate across spectrums—illuminating nuances within our world one photograph at a time.

In this era where content is omnipresent yet often fleeting, Javier Laos stands out by crafting visuals that linger. His bodywork serves as a beacon for aspiring photographers—showcasing how embracing diversity in subjects enriched by coherent philosophical underpinnings can elevate mere photos into compelling tales waiting to be told.

Through every click and flash, Javier Laos Photography remains committed to creating moments where light doesn’t just reveal but profoundly transforms perceptions—imbuing every frame with depth and dynamism reflective of life itself.

Nature’s Echoes: Exploring Chenyu Huang’s Artistic Inspirations

By: Lynda

Step into the world of New York-based emerging artist Chenyu Huang, featured prominently in the “Self-Observation” group exhibition at 4C Gallery. Huang’s meticulous works not only showcase the profound essence of nature but also narrate a celebration of life’s intricacies and warmth.

Beyond surface beauty, Huang aspires to ignite profound echoes and spark dialogues that inspire positive transformations through her art. Her artwork invites viewers to join her in exploring the beauty that emerges from the interplay of light and shadow in life’s intricate tapestry.

We invite Huang to explore the inspirations fueling her art, the personal stories woven into her creations, and the deliberate shift from fashion design to fine art.

What inspires you to create? Who do you make your art for and why?

My artistic endeavours predominantly revolve around themes of nature and humanity, drawing inspiration from various sources, like children and adolescents with adverse childhood experiences and individuals affected by occupational diseases…

The series showcased in this exhibition is born from the awe-inspiring sunrises and sunsets that have captivated me during my travels around the world. I aim to capture the essence of these breathtaking moments and share their beauty with others, drawing from the intricate marvels of nature to create evocative paintings.

While my work often hopes to resonate with specific subsets of people, it happens that this particular series, “Sunshine Unveiled”, is not tailored to any individual in particular. Instead, it serves as a testament to the profound emotions evoked by witnessing such remarkable scenes. I acknowledge that not everyone may connect with my artwork similarly, but I want to invite the audience to immerse themselves in their memories of exploring life’s beauty.

How does your artwork relate to your personal identity and experience?

My artwork is an intricate reflection of my personal identity and life experiences. With each brushstroke and color choice, I pour my innermost thoughts and emotions onto the canvas. I am painting unveiled sunshine; I am also in a process that is deeply cathartic. It serves as both a release and a sanctuary amidst life’s complexities. The themes and subjects I often explore not only describe beauty and esthetics but also mirror moments of introspection and personal growth, encapsulating visual narratives of my journey.

I refrain from explicitly conveying my mood to the audience while they are viewing my paintings since I do not want to interrupt the dialogue building between the audience and the artworks. I hope it can foster a more organic connection between them and the artwork, enriching the viewing experience and inviting personal reflection.

Ultimately, my art is an extension of myself—an expression of my innermost feelings and a reflection of the human experience.

Transitioning from a background in fashion design and education, what distinct factors led you to pivot towards fine art, specifically in the realm of painting?

Transitioning from a background in fashion design to the realm of fine art has been a profoundly meaningful journey for me. While fashion design offered avenues for exploring creativity and aesthetics, fine art has provided me with a distinct focus on capturing natural moments and delving into the beauty found in both nature and humanity.

Moving from fashion design to fine art has allowed me to explore various mediums, and I am also exploring new mediums and new techs. This transition signifies more than just a personal journey; it represents a commitment to refining my craft and nurturing the artistic development of young minds. It grants me the opportunity to merge psychology and visual art, creating engaging and transformative experiences for participants. In essence, my shift towards fine art is not only a journey of self-discovery but also a path toward a deeper understanding and connection to the development of children and adolescents, particularly those with adverse experiences. This transition also affords me the opportunity to advance my research on the potential of visual art and art education in supporting adolescents with adverse childhood experiences. I hope one day, art, in either form, can provide them with a channel for expression and a path to healing.

Can you talk to us about your paintings in the exhibition and how your journey has brought you to making them?

The showcased paintings in the exhibition belong to the collection titled “Sunshine Unveiled”. Inspired by the breathtaking sunrises and sunsets witnessed in various locations like Hawaii, New Mexico, Boston, and Arizona, I strive to capture the ethereal power of light as it penetrates through the clouds. The deliberate interplay of light and shadow within the paintings acts as a visual metaphor, prompting contemplation on the contrasts of life and the inherent beauty they encompass.

As I work on painting the unveiled sunshine, I find the process deeply cathartic—it serves as both a release and a sanctuary amidst life’s complexities.

What would you like to tell the world through your art? What feelings do you hope to inspire in the viewer?

I want to convey a message of hope and resilience, symbolized by the interplay of light and shadow. The paintings stand as reminders that no matter how profound the darkness may seem, the dawn inevitably follows. Through my art, I aspire to impart a message of hope and resilience, symbolized by the interplay of light and shadow. Each brushstroke and color choice is meticulously crafted to evoke a sense of optimism and possibility. “Sunshine Unveiled” invites viewers to find comfort in the embrace of a new day and the boundless possibilities it brings.

In essence, Huang’s art invites us to pause, reflect, and celebrate the beauty that emerges from the interplay of light and shadow in life’s intricate tapestry—a timeless invitation to explore, introspect, and embrace the profound beauty of our shared human experience.

Exploring the Eco-Friendly Shift in Today’s Art Scene As a Canvas For Change

As the world becomes increasingly aware of environmental issues, art is not staying behind. Artists, galleries, and museums embrace sustainable practices, demonstrating that creativity can flourish while being mindful of the planet. This shift is a response to global environmental concerns and a reflection of a deeper, more conscious engagement with materials and processes. Explore how the art world is leading the charge toward sustainability, proving that the future of art is bright and green.

Sustainable Materials Make Their Mark

The foundation of any art piece is its materials, and there’s a growing trend towards using sustainable, non-toxic, and recycled components. Artists are turning to earth-friendly paints, reclaimed wood, and other materials that reduce the environmental footprint of their work. This movement is not just about minimizing harm; it’s also about exploring new textures, mediums, and expressions. By choosing materials that are kind to the planet, artists are opening new avenues of creativity while making a statement about the importance of conservation and sustainability.

Leading the Eco Revolution: Green Spaces and Galleries

Galleries and museums are also crucial in leading the eco revolution within the art world. By adopting green building standards, utilizing energy-efficient lighting, and reducing waste, these spaces set examples for eco-consciousness that go beyond the art on the walls. Some galleries even dedicate themselves exclusively to showcasing environmentally-themed art, further emphasizing the sector’s commitment to the planet. This approach highlights the art world’s adaptability and its dedication to being at the forefront of societal shifts toward sustainability.

Artistic Practices Reimagined

Beyond materials and spaces, the processes by which art is created, distributed, and displayed are transforming. Artists are increasingly adopting practices that lessen environmental impact, such as digital art forms requiring no physical materials. Furthermore, the popularity of online exhibitions has skyrocketed, reducing the need for transport and the carbon footprint associated with traditional gallery showings. This digital shift expands the reach of art and aligns with eco-friendly principles, showcasing how technological advancements can complement environmental goals.

The Artistic Influence on Eco-Friendly Personal Care

In an intriguing fusion of art and sustainability, the personal care industry, inspired by the principles of the art world, has seen a rise in eco-friendly products, such as shampoo bars. Artists and creatives, known for their mindful approach to materials and impacts, have championed these products, showcasing a preference for items that align with their environmental values. Shampoo bars, celebrated for their reduced packaging and natural ingredients, mirror the art community’s shift towards sustainable practices. And just as art comes in many forms, you can even find shampoo bars for gray hair. This choice reflects a broader trend of integrating eco-conscious decisions into all aspects of life, proving that the influence of art extends far beyond the canvas and into the very products used daily by people. By endorsing and utilizing these sustainable alternatives, the art community reinforces the message that every aspect of consumption patterns can be reimagined for the better.

A Masterpiece of Sustainability

The art world’s embrace of eco-friendly practices represents a powerful confluence of creativity, innovation, and environmental stewardship. From the materials used in creating art to the spaces that showcase it and even extending to the personal care products favored by its practitioners, every facet of the art community is being reimagined through a green lens. This holistic approach to sustainability reflects a deep understanding that art is not just a reflection of society but also a force for change, capable of inspiring and influencing broader shifts towards a more sustainable future.

As the art community continues to explore and integrate eco-friendly practices, it sets a precedent for other sectors to follow. The move towards sustainability in the art world is not just about making art that is environmentally conscious but about living in a way that embodies those principles. In doing so, artists and art enthusiasts alike are painting a future where creativity and sustainability are inextricably linked, offering a vision of a world where every action and every creation contributes to a healthier planet. This journey towards sustainability is indeed a masterpiece in the making, showcasing the art world’s ability to lead by example and inspire a global audience to think differently about how individuals live, create, and care for the world.

Bridging Art and Empowerment: The Journey of Sylvia Benitez and the Gentileschi Aegis Gallery Association

The art world, with its rich expressions and styles, has long been a reflection of societal change and cultural evolution. Within this dynamic, certain individuals stand out for their contribution to not just art but also to the empowerment of underrepresented groups. Sylvia Benitez is one such figure whose journey in the art world, particularly after moving to Texas in 2006, exemplifies the powerful role of art as a medium for social change and empowerment, especially for women artists. This move furthered an influential journey in the world of art, particularly for women artists in South Texas. Benitez, whose career already spanned various facets of artistic expression, would soon become a beacon of support and empowerment for female artists in the region.

Upon her arrival in Texas, Benitez approached Margaret Craig, who was then chair of Painting and Drawing at the Southwest School of Art & Craft (later renamed the Southwest School of Art). Her interaction with Craig led to Benitez starting to teach community landscape classes. It was here that she noticed a significant gap in the South Texas art community: many of her students were highly talented women artists who lacked opportunities to exhibit their work, as well as solidarity among artists and business acumen in the arts.

Identifying this need, Benitez set out in 2010 to establish a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization aimed at addressing these issues. Her vision materialized in 2011 when she was awarded the status of a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, specifically aimed at furthering women artists of South Texas through exhibition, promotion, and education.

The organization was named the Gentileschi Aegis Gallery Association (GAGA), a name that carries profound symbolic significance. It was inspired by Artemisia Gentileschi, a renowned female artist from the 1600s who became the first celebrated woman painter in the predominantly male-dominated art canon. Furthermore, the name also honors Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom, war, and craft. The term ‘Aegis’ in the organization’s name, a nod to Athena’s protective shield, symbolizes protection and wellbeing – values at the core of GAGA’s mission. This symbolism also resonates with GAGA’s ethos of protecting and nurturing the artistic talents of women.

During her early years in Texas, Benitez’s artistry also evolved. She began pursuing atmospheric/tonal painting, combining this technique with her Arte Povera sensibility. A notable example of this period is her installation “Where Meets the Sea” at the Mitte Gallery at Texas State University in 2008. This work used ready-made chain pulls to mimic both line and rain paired with tonal painting and incorporated minimal music created by Charles Ditto, achieving an atmospheric intention that was both visual and poetic.

Bridging Art and Empowerment: The Journey of Sylvia Benitez and the Gentileschi Aegis Gallery Association

Sylvia Benitez’s contributions to the art world have been recognized widely. She is listed in the “Art in America Guide to Galleries, Museums, and Artists,” a testament to her impact and influence on the art community. This recognition, coupled with her role in founding GAGA, underscores her commitment to fostering artistic talent and providing a platform for women artists.

GAGA, under Benitez’s guidance, has become more than just an organization; it’s a symbol of empowerment and opportunity. It stands as a testament to Benitez’s vision of a world where women artists are not only recognized but celebrated and supported. Through exhibitions, promotions, and educational initiatives, GAGA continues to make significant strides in leveling the playing field for women artists in South Texas and beyond.

In conclusion, Sylvia Benitez’s journey since moving to Texas in 2006 exemplifies the power of art to enact social change. Her establishment of the Gentileschi Aegis Gallery Association has opened doors for countless women artists, offering them the much-needed aegis in the competitive and often daunting world of art. By bridging the gap between talent and opportunity, Benitez has not only advanced her own artistic pursuits but has also helped forge a more inclusive and empowering art community.
