Neil Patrick Harris, one of the most award-winning actors in Hollywood, is set to encounter a supposed time-traveling alien with two hearts.
The BBC has revealed that the actor is part of their Doctor Who cast and will be filming scenes for an upcoming episode set to premiere in 2023, the 60th year since the show was first released.
“It’s my huge honor to open our studio doors for the mighty Neil Patrick Harris… but who, why, what is he playing? You’ll just have to wait,” Russell T. Davies, the director of Doctor Who, said in a statement.
“But I promise you, the stuff you, the stuff we’re shooting now, is off the scale. Doctor, beware!”
Harris has collaborated with many other writers and creators, such as Davies, on It’s a Sin.
It is not often for famous American stars to make cameos on the British sci-fi show, but it is not unknown. Justin Chatwin appeared on the show during the 2016 Christmas special episode, and Goran Višnjić played Nikola Tesla on an episode in 2020.

The cast of Doctor Who has been one that is constantly changing, but this year it looks as though there will be some significant changes. In May, they announced that Ncuti Gatwa would take on the Doctor role following Jodie Whittaker’s expected departure.
Merely days after that announcement, the BBC disclosed that former Doctor Who actors David Tennant and Catherine Tate would come back to the series the following year, adding that Yasmin Finney was joining the cast.
Whittaker, in an interview with EW last year, talked about filming the scene in which her Thirteenth Doctor evolves into the newest character version.
“It was singularly the most emotional day on set I think I’ve ever had,” she stated. “It’s a really bizarre feeling because it’s the best time I’ve ever had on a job, and I made the decision to leave it, so it’s a really strange thing to do to yourself. It feels like you’re giving yourself stitches – like, ‘Why have you done it?’
“But… it felt right. It was a wonderfully-celebratory-slash-grief-ridden day that I could spend with the family that I’d made. I suppose the best thing about it is that the episodes are still on. So, until they’re off, I don’t have to really get my head around the fact that it’s not my part.”
