“Broadway’s back, baby. And she’s waiting for you,” says Ariana Debose in her opening line.
The Tony Awards is back, and they’re taking place in Radio City Music Hall this time. It’s been three years since we saw a performance at these ceremonies due to the pandemic – it is now celebrating its 75th year.
Hosted by Debose – who recently snagged her Oscar award as Anita in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story – the awards show conducts the first-ever return to its original month and venue since before the pandemic. It also marks the first time in Tony Awards history that it broadcast live coast-to-coast.
The event was aired on CBS, and Paramount+ – coverage will be split.
On the Paramount+ hour, countless shows received golden statues, including Six for Best Costume Design and Best Original Score of a Musical and MJ for Best Sound Design and Best Lighting Design of a Musical.
On the other hand, CBS brought the show to a celebratory mood at its opening, highlighting DeBose flaunting her skills with an impressive mash-up performance that included some modern songs and classics from past musicals.
