Daniel Harding Named New LA Phil Music Director

Daniel Harding will take over leadership of the Los Angeles Philharmonic after the orchestra confirmed the internationally recognized conductor as the successor to Gustavo Dudamel, marking a major transition for one of the United States’ most prominent classical music institutions.

The appointment introduces a new artistic chapter for the Los Angeles-based orchestra, which has spent more than a decade under Dudamel’s direction while expanding its international profile through large-scale performances, educational initiatives, and cross-disciplinary collaborations. Harding is expected to begin his tenure during the 2027-28 concert season.

The announcement arrives during a period of continued growth for the LA Phil, which operates both Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles and the Hollywood Bowl. The organization has remained one of the most visible cultural institutions in the country through a combination of orchestral programming, contemporary music commissions, digital initiatives, and partnerships spanning film, visual art, and live performance.

Daniel Harding Set to Lead Major U.S. Orchestra

Harding has built an international conducting career across Europe over several decades, working with orchestras including the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris, and the London Symphony Orchestra. He has also maintained a long-standing relationship with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and has appeared regularly at major opera houses and music festivals.

Known for interpretations of composers including Gustav Mahler, Benjamin Britten, and Richard Strauss, Harding developed his career after early mentorship under conductor Simon Rattle. He first gained broader recognition during the 1990s after conducting professionally at a young age and later became associated with several leading European ensembles.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic described Harding as a conductor with extensive experience across both symphonic and operatic repertoire. His selection followed a search process led by orchestra leadership and board members after Dudamel announced plans to conclude his tenure.

Harding’s appointment places him at the center of one of the largest orchestral organizations in North America. In addition to overseeing concert programming and artistic planning, the music director role includes shaping educational outreach, international touring, recording activity, and long-term institutional strategy.

Leadership Transition Follows Gustavo Dudamel Era

Dudamel has served as music director since 2009 and became one of the most recognizable figures in classical music during his time in Los Angeles. Under his leadership, the orchestra expanded global touring operations and developed projects that connected orchestral performance with film, technology, and social engagement.

The Venezuelan conductor also played a central role in the expansion of the Youth Orchestra Los Angeles initiative, often referred to as YOLA, which provides music education programs to young people across underserved communities in the region.

During Dudamel’s tenure, the orchestra continued commissioning new music while strengthening relationships with contemporary composers and artists from outside the traditional classical sphere. Performances at the Hollywood Bowl also became increasingly integrated into broader entertainment programming that included film concerts, pop collaborations, and multimedia productions.

His departure marks the end of a highly visible artistic period for the institution. The organization confirmed that Dudamel will continue serving through the conclusion of his current contract before Harding formally assumes the position.

The leadership change comes at a time when orchestras across the United States are evaluating long-term audience engagement strategies, digital performance formats, and approaches to younger concertgoers. Large institutions have increasingly emphasized accessibility, contemporary programming, and interdisciplinary work alongside traditional repertoire.

Los Angeles Philharmonic Expands Global Cultural Presence

The orchestra has maintained an influential role within both the local arts community and the international music industry. Performances at Walt Disney Concert Hall have regularly attracted conductors, soloists, composers, and artists from around the world, while the Hollywood Bowl continues operating as one of the largest outdoor concert venues in the United States.

The organization has incorporated film music performances, experimental contemporary works, and artist collaborations that extended beyond standard orchestral programming. Those efforts have contributed to broader visibility among audiences outside the traditional classical music demographic.

The LA Phil has also benefited from the architectural and cultural profile of Walt Disney Concert Hall, designed by architect Frank Gehry. Since opening in 2003, the venue has become one of the city’s defining cultural landmarks and an internationally recognized performance space.

Programming under Harding is expected to continue balancing canonical orchestral repertoire with newer commissions and collaborative projects. The organization has regularly emphasized innovation alongside traditional performance standards, particularly through festivals, themed programs, and partnerships with living composers.

The orchestra’s international reputation has also been shaped by touring schedules and recording projects involving both standard symphonic works and newer compositions.
