Some stories are made of fabric more transcendent than others, weaving threads of endless passion and courageous spirit. Amongst those, the story of Robert Abernathy, a former teacher who found his second calling in country music, is indeed inspirational.
Abernathy, a dedicated teacher, retired too soon from his lifelong vocation but found himself missing the dynamic growth and vigor that comes with teaching children. His newfound emptiness led him back to Smyrna Primary Elementary School in Rutherford County, just outside Nashville, where he now imparts fitness and sports knowledge to young kids. Filled with fresh enthusiasm, he confesses to loving his job more than ever, and the joy he receives from witnessing his students’ eager anticipation for his classes is immeasurable.
However, it’s not just the classroom that Abernathy has decided to conquer once again. He has reemerged in the limelight with his stunning album, “Somewhere Around 18.” The album is a testament to Abernathy’s tireless work with various songwriters over the past couple of years and the meticulous efforts of his producer, Josh Bright.
The creative process yielded over 25 potential tracks, all of which Abernathy had originally planned to release as singles or perhaps a series of EPs. However, a deliberate revisit to each song made him realize that they all merited a collective audience. He handpicked 18 songs that not only appealed to him on a personal level but were also ready for the radio waves.
‘Somewhere Around 18’ is a perfect blend of personal reminiscences and musical prowess. The album has songs that Abernathy holds dear to his heart, such as “Heaven Has a Radio” because of its personal significance, and tracks like “Out of the Blue,” “A Little Tied Up,” “Beach Looks Good on You” and “Redneck Magic” that never seem to lose their charm. Despite their disparate themes, each song manages to touch upon fond memories of Abernathy’s youthful times, alluding to the invincible spirit of his 18-year-old self and his nostalgic adventures in the reckless abandon of youth.
Abernathy’s passion is reflected not only in his teaching endeavors but also through his heartfelt songs in ‘Somewhere Around 18’. This underlines his belief that every piece of his creative work, whether musical or educational, deserves a clear and loud presentation to the world. His faith in this process is vividly evident in his words – “I had initially planned on releasing these as singles or a series of EPs. But ultimately, once I took the time to listen and revisit each of them in detail, I realized they all deserved to be heard, and it was time to throw them into the public and see what happens.”
The enthusiasm and acceptance with which ‘Somewhere Around 18’ has been received stands as a testament to the unfettered passion and unyielding tenacity of Robert Abernathy. It is a vivifying reminder that it’s never too late to pursue one’s passion and that sometimes, the journey in itself is the reward.
