Indie Photographer Wants to Change the Content Landscape

In an era where originality seems to be on the brink of extinction, one young artist is daring to defy the norms that have long governed the creative landscape. At just 21 years old, married, and a father of two, Koston Williams feels stuck In a world dominated by moving images and videos that vie for people’s attention. Williams is boldly focusing on still photography, a medium he believes holds untapped potential for personal expression and storytelling.

“Do what you like and do it honestly,” is one of Kostons favorite quotes from Tom Delonge, the lead singer of Blink 182. This sentiment echoes through his work, setting him apart in an industry that often favors conformity over creativity. Amidst the cacophony of digital content where everyone seems to be merely copying and pasting, Williams’ approach is a breath of fresh air. He isn’t interested in following trends or adhering to established ‘rules’ that dictate what photography should look like. Instead, he’s committed to capturing moments that resonate with him personally, hoping they will also strike a chord with others.

Williams’ entry into photography was driven by a desire to offer an alternative perspective in an increasingly homogenized world. Today’s cultural landscape is often criticized for its lack of originality—movies recycle familiar plots, while other creators copy whatever is successful, just trying to get views on social media. Against this backdrop, Williams sees photography as an art form and a means of challenging the status quo. “My favorite part about photography is that a picture can have different meanings for different people; you can’t do that with video,” he explains.

Williams’s refusal to confine himself within the boundaries traditionally associated with photography sets him apart. While many photographers specialize in specific genres, such as landscapes or portraits, he allows his instincts and interests to guide his lens. This results in a diverse portfolio that defies easy categorization but is unified by its authenticity.

Williams acknowledges that choosing photography over video puts him at odds with current trends where video content reigns supreme. However, he views this not as a limitation but as an advantage. “Photography demands more from both the creator and the observer,” he states confidently. “It’s not about passive consumption; it’s about trying to create a feeling through only a photo.” This interactive aspect of photography fascinates Williams—it allows for myriad interpretations based on individual experiences and perspectives.

Through his still-growing Instagram account (@kostonwilliams), he hopes to connect with other artists and grow a meaningful community through mass-produced content.
