Sincere, Smart, and Funny: Jon Matteson’s Starkid, Dropout TV, and Beyond

By: Nia Bowers

Before the record-breaking musicals and high-profile collaborations, Jon was a military kid who came of age in Kansas. He studied at the University of Kansas before immersing himself in the Chicago improv scene, performing at iconic institutions like Second City, iO, and The Annoyance. It was there he met the artists behind Starkid Productions, who later cast him in The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals, a cult-favorite horror-comedy musical that would eventually bring him to Los Angeles. His diverse background shaped his distinct approach to performance.

A Breakout Role, a Record-Breaking Reprisal

Today, Matteson stars in The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals: Reprised, a reprise of the 2018 show that has become the most-backed theater Kickstarter in history. You can watch the original version for free on YouTube. His performance in the production and close collaboration with Starkid over the last eight years has helped establish his role as a well-known presence in the fan-favorite troupe, including standout work in Nerdy Prudes Must Die and Cinderella’s Castle. His adaptability in different roles has been a key factor in his continued success.

Beyond the Stage: A Creative Force

Matteson’s creative reach doesn’t stop at musicals. Alongside George Primavera, he co-created Smosh Presents: We’re All Gonna Die, a live TTRPG experience that continues to grow with six primetime shows this season at Dynasty Typewriter. His work blends performance and production, imagination and structure—a skill set honed from years of saying yes to every opportunity, including gigs as a mascot handler, cruise ship entertainer, and Apple Genius Bar technician. His passion for blending genres has also led to a stronger fan connection.

He’s also brought his voice and humor to Dropout TV, appearing on both Dirty Laundry and Smartypants. His ability to work across multiple formats makes him a rare kind of multi-hyphenate: someone who genuinely understands how to help build something new with a team, rather than simply performing within it. This versatility has also allowed him to be an integral part of various innovative projects.

Purpose with Gratitude

What sets Matteson apart isn’t just his resume but the way he approaches his work. Grateful for every step of the journey, he carries the kind of sincerity and joy that inspires castmates and creatives alike. He understands what it takes to make a show happen, from the hustle of Kickstarter campaigns to the hours of rehearsals and rewrites, and he brings that perspective into every room he enters. His humility and work ethic continue to inspire many in the creative community.

His background outside of entertainment adds further depth to his perspective. From retail work to tech support and entertainment gigs on cruise ships, each job has left its mark, enriching his performances with authenticity and wit. These experiences also give him a strong sense of resilience and adaptability—traits every creative professional can benefit from.

Matteson’s Future: Building More

Matteson dreams of continuing to do what he does now, but full-time: building smart, funny, sincere work with the brilliant friends he already collaborates with. From house ownership goals to expanding the reach of We’re All Gonna Die, he has no plans of slowing down. His commitment to expanding his creative horizons remains unwavering.
