On June 7, 2025, artist Leon “Shades” Ndemo received an honorable mention for his striking graphite portrait of Jean-Michel Basquiat during the opening night of the Whittier Art Gallery Summer Show (the gallery, a long-standing hub for creative talent in Southern California since 1939).
Shades had six original pieces on display. Each piece captures his signature attention to detail. A classically trained artist with a BFA in Fine Arts, Shades is also the creative force behind MerchForDogLovers.com, a lifestyle brand for dog lovers who want to wear their passion for dogs with pride. Last year, he made headlines by designing the world’s first 3D-printed luxury pooper scooper—fusing his background in 3D modeling and fine art to create stylish, functional products for pet enthusiasts.
“I took a class on 3D modeling and used that knowledge to design something cool for dog lovers,” Shades explains.

Recognizing Artistic Excellence
When asked why awards matter in the Summer Show, Grueser explained, “They allow us to promote and encourage innovation and excellence within our artist community.”
The judge for this year’s show, Jeanette Kelly, offered powerful insight into ‘Shades’ Basquiat portrait:
“This piece was executed with exceptional skill. Working in graphite—a medium limited to shades of black on white—is no small feat. But this drawing captures more than Basquiat’s likeness. It holds your gaze. The subject’s mouth is pursed, as if he’s about to speak, and his eyes feel like they’re speaking directly to your soul.”
Why Shades Was Encouraged to Enter the Juried Show
Lark Hicky, a fellow artist and board member of the Whittier Art Gallery, played a crucial role in encouraging Leon “Shades” Ndemo to enter the juried Summer Show. As someone deeply involved in the gallery and its community, Hicky was excited to have a new artist like Shades join their ranks. “Shades is a new gallery member, and I was eager for others to see his work,” Hicky shared. Her enthusiasm wasn’t just about welcoming new talent but also about ensuring that Shades had the opportunity to showcase his remarkable skills in such a prestigious exhibition.
This year’s Summer Show was particularly special as it marked the first juried exhibit since Shades became a member of the gallery. With over 160 entries, the competition was fierce, making his recognition even more significant. “It’s no small feat to receive an honorable mention,” Hicky remarked, underscoring the high level of talent in the show. She went on to praise Shades’ work, saying, “His drawings are meticulous and masterfully done.” Hicky’s words reflect not only her support for Shades but also the deep respect she holds for his artistic dedication and precision. Her encouragement and pride in his achievement are clear, as she continues to support and elevate fellow artists.
What Made This Year’s Show Special?
“This is the largest show I’ve seen in my 13 years at the gallery,” says Hicky. “The variety and quality of work are outstanding. We’re proud of our legacy and thrilled to continue offering free admission to the community.
