American Friends of NATAL Hosts ‘Helmets for Heroes’ Auction

By: Maria Williams

An extraordinary art auction showcased 17 helmets transformed into stunning works of art by internationally acclaimed Israeli artists as part of “Brush Helmets for Heroes,” a project dedicated to supporting mental health through the power of art. American Friends of NATAL (AFN), the U.S.-based organization that champions the critical work of NATAL in Israel, hosted an auction during the “Voices of Resilience” gala that took place in New York City. The auction was led by Yuval David, an Emmy and multi-award-winning actor, filmmaker, journalist, and leading Jewish LGBT activist and advisor, whose vibrant presence added depth and significance to the auction.

The auction proceeds directly benefited NATAL, Israel’s Trauma and Resiliency Center, ensuring critical support for the mental rehabilitation of Israel Defense Forces (IDF) veterans grappling with the aftermath of trauma. “Helmets for Heroes,” a collaboration between Brush and NATAL, was conceived to address both the immediate and long-term needs of those defending Israel. This unique initiative invited a carefully curated group of internationally recognized Israeli artists to reimagine and redesign IDF helmets, turning them into expressive canvases reflecting their individual artistic styles.

The funds raised were allocated to support NATAL’s conventional PTSD therapies, as well as groundbreaking research projects and clinics selected by their esteemed scientific advisory board. These projects explore innovative and less conventional technologies and therapies in the PTSD field, paving the way for new advancements in mental health care. Through this powerful union of art, philanthropy, and resilience, “Brush Helmets for Heroes” brought hope and healing to those who have sacrificed so much.

Maayan Aviv, CEO of American Friends of NATAL, shared, “These helmets are more than art—they are symbols of courage and hope,” says. “By turning protective gear into creative expressions, we highlight the importance of mental health support and the urgent need for comprehensive trauma treatment.”

“At Brush, we recognize that the mental health needs of our soldiers are as critical as their physical safety. Since October 7th and the ongoing war, the demand for PTSD prevention and treatment has surged dramatically. Our mission is to support the brave men and women defending Israel by funding both conventional and innovative therapies proven to aid in their mental health and resilience,” said Dr. Ilan Preiss, Co-founder of Brush.

Artists were selected by Brush, and each artist was given complete freedom to redesign or paint an IDF helmet using their unique style. Examples include:

  • David Gerstein: A celebrated artist with extensive international education, including studies at the Bezalel Academy, the Ecole Supérieure des Beaux Arts, and St. Martin’s School of Art, Gerstein brings his innovative vision to The Butterfly Effect. This piece draws on the butterfly as a symbol of transformation, resilience, and hope, serving as a metaphor for rebirth and the triumph of spirit over adversity.
  • Uzi Amrani: Uzi Amrani: Drawing from his military service in southern Lebanon, Amrani’s piece, Protected From All Harm, wraps a helmet in prayer shawls, olive branches, and leather straps, symbolizing the connection between faith and the battlefield.
  • Sigalit Landau: Known for her transformative works, Landau’s helmet, Memory Loss, features a soldier’s face welded from scrap iron. The perforated helmet, resembling spikes from within, symbolizes the fragility of protection and the inner toll of trauma. The wide-eyed soldier reflects the shock and burden of war.
  • Tomer Peretz: An internationally recognized artist, Peretz will debut a completely new and experimental work at Helmets for Heroes.

The success of “Brush Helmets for Heroes” demonstrated the profound impact that art and community can have on addressing mental health challenges. By combining the talents of visionary artists, the dedication of philanthropic leaders, and the generosity of attendees, the event created a ripple effect of support for those most in need. Each helmet, transformed into a vibrant expression of creativity and hope, served as a poignant reminder of the resilience of Israel’s veterans and the critical importance of supporting their mental well-being.

As the final hammer fell and the last bid was placed, the evening closed with a renewed sense of purpose. The funds will continue to fuel NATAL’s essential work, offering life-changing therapies and advancing innovative approaches to PTSD treatment. Beyond the financial success, the event united people around a shared mission of healing and recovery, ensuring that the sacrifices of Israel’s defenders are met with compassion and care.
