We are thrilled to bring you an exclusive interview with Melinda Fornero, the dynamic force behind the dance sensation “Mama Watch Me Dance.” With over two decades of experience and a quirky, engaging personality, Melinda has created a unique dance phenomenon that’s captivating young dancers and their parents alike. Her YouTube channel and programs are a delightful mix of fun, education, and creativity. Let’s dive into the world of Miss Melinda and discover what makes her dance programs so special.
Q: Melinda, your journey in dance began a bit later than most. Can you tell us about how you got started and what kept you motivated?
Melinda: Absolutely! I started dancing at 14, which is a bit late in the dance world. From my very first ballet class, I was hooked. I wasn’t the most natural dancer, but I had an unstoppable passion. My goal was to dance “en pointe,” and despite starting late and the many life events that came along, I pursued this dream with relentless determination. Dance became a way to express myself and connect with my inner joy.
Q: Your YouTube channel “Mama Watch Me Dance” has become a hit! What inspired you to start this channel, and how does it reflect your personality and teaching style?
Melinda: The pandemic was a turning point. My life’s work, which is such a crucial part of my soul, was momentarily silenced. I knew I needed to adapt and continue sharing the joy of dance. That’s how “Mama Watch Me Dance” was born. The channel is a reflection of my quirky, fun-loving personality. It’s filled with silly warm-ups like “Stinky Toes” and “Hot Lava,” and structured classes that make learning dance techniques a blast. It’s about making dance accessible, enjoyable, and a bit whimsical for young children.
Q: What sets your dance programs apart from others?
Melinda: My programs are designed to be inclusive and engaging, combining elements of Pop, Jazz, Ballet, and Broadway into one fun-filled experience. We incorporate dance vocabulary, rhythm and counting, and music accompaniment, making it easy for kids to follow along. But what really sets us apart is the emphasis on creativity and self-expression. Each class is a journey that includes warm-ups, structured lessons, free dance, and even quiet time for reflection.
Q: How do you keep your classes both educational and entertaining for young children?
Melinda: It’s all about balance. Each class is carefully crafted to engage young minds and bodies. For instance, our warm-up exercises like “Chop Your Mountains” and “Stinky Toes” are both fun and effective in preparing the body for dance. The structured lessons introduce basic techniques in a playful way, and we always include free dance time where kids can let loose and be creative. The goal is to make learning feel like an adventure.
Q: Can you share some feedback you’ve received from children and parents about your programs?
Melinda: Oh, the feedback has been heartwarming! Emily, age 5, said, “I like to do dance with Miss Melinda and to do free dance. Miss Melinda loves me and makes me proud.” William’s nanny shared that he loved mirroring my movements and making silly faces, calling the experience a definite success. And Gavin, age 3, said, “I like when you get to dance and stuff. Putting on hats is weird and funny!” These testimonials remind me why I love what I do.
Q: You’ve expanded your reach significantly. What’s next for Music N’ Motion and “Mama Watch Me Dance”?
Melinda: I’m excited to bring more classes and programs to local schools in the South Bay, especially within Long Beach Unified, Los Alamitos, and Lakewood school districts. I want to continue inspiring children to find joy in dance and movement. The YouTube channel will keep growing with more fun and creative content, and I’m also exploring new ways to integrate dance into early childhood education across various platforms.
Q: Your story is so inspiring. What advice would you give to other women pursuing their dreams, no matter their age?
Melinda: Never give up on your dreams, no matter what age you are. I started my dance journey later than most and faced many challenges along the way, but my passion kept me going. If you have a dream, pursue it with all your heart. It’s never too late to start something new and make a difference. I hope to encourage at least one woman to continue her dream and not give up, no matter what.
Q: Lastly, how can parents and schools get involved with “Mama Watch Me Dance”?
Melinda: Parents can subscribe to our YouTube channel and join our vibrant community. Schools interested in bringing our programs to their students can visit www.mamawatchmedance.com for more information. We’re always excited to welcome new dancers into our family and share the joy of movement.
