Cory M. Coons, a seasoned singer-songwriter with over 30 years in the music industry, has recently released a special edition album, “Across The Great Divide (Album Cuts & Singles 2012-2022).” In a candid interview, Coons shares the inspirations behind this retrospective compilation, the creative process, and his reflections on his storied career.

A Decade of Music: The Inspiration Behind the Album

The idea for “Across The Great Divide” emerged during a conversation with a friend, James, who hosts a radio show. “He asked if I had any plans to do another retrospective or compilation album,” Coons recalls. “After thinking about it, I decided it was a good time to compile a decade’s worth of music on one album.” This special edition includes all of Coons’ singles released on MTS Records, along with a few unreleased album tracks.

In 2023, Coons expanded the album to include a digital download version with a new acoustic track, “White Picket Fence,” and a 24-page PDF booklet. The booklet, created with Brad from “Get Seen Graphics,” features exclusive pictures, liner notes, credits, thank-yous, and song lyrics, all intertwined with beautiful artwork. “It’s a unique package that fans can enjoy,” says Coons, “taking them back to the old days with something tangible.”

The Story Behind “White Picket Fence”

The new acoustic version of “White Picket Fence” is deeply personal for Coons. “It’s a little autobiographical,” he explains. The song reflects dreams of a peaceful family life, inspired by memories of his grandfather’s fields in Eastern Ontario. “I have fond memories of sitting on a big stone by a creek and dreaming about the future.” This song, included in the special edition album, adds a fresh and intimate touch to the collection.

Evolution of Sound

Reflecting on his three-decade career, Coons sees this album as both a closing chapter and a stepping stone. “I’ve been through a lot in the independent music industry,” he says. His sound, described as “CMC,” blends influences from early country music, 80s pop-rock, and roots-rock. “I’ve melted these influences into what I call the ‘CMC sound,'” Coons explains, hinting at future explorations, possibly even into gospel music.

Creative Process Behind the Booklet

Creating the downloadable PDF booklet was a nostalgic journey for Coons. “It was great to sort through photos of myself, my family, and band members,” he shares. The booklet also allowed him to thank everyone who has supported him over the years, from musicians to fans. “Family, Faith, and Music,” he says, are the pillars of his journey.

Musical Influences

Coons’ music is a blend of classic melodic rock and Americana. Influences range from the Beach Boys and Elvis to 80s hair bands like Poison and Bon Jovi and icons like Tom Petty and John Mellencamp. “They all have shaped the ‘CMC sound,'” Coons notes, emphasizing his love for great melodies and honest music.

Working with Legendary Producers

Coons has had the privilege of working with legendary producer Ron Nevison. “He knows how to draw out the very best from artists,” says Coons. Nevison’s influence is evident in Coons’ music, enhancing his sound with decades of industry knowledge. “It was a dream to work with him,” Coons adds.

Recognition and Awards

Receiving recognition at the Josie Music Awards has been a highlight for Coons. “It’s an incredible feeling,” he says. Winning “Song of the Year (Rock)” for “Long Hard Rain” on the Grand Ole Opry stage was a surreal experience. This year, Coons is nominated in four categories, including “Artist of the Year (Multi-Genre),” an honor he finds exciting and humbling.

Memorable Moments

Looking back, Coons highlights performing at the legendary “Whisky-A-Go-Go” in Hollywood and receiving an award for “Studio Album of the Year” in 2014. “These experiences were surreal and unforgettable,” he reflects.

Staying True to His Roots

Balancing his roots with evolving sounds, Coons believes in honesty and sincerity in his music. “People will see right through you if it’s not honest,” he says. His motto is to surround himself with the right team and resonate positively with listeners through his lyrics and songs.

Future Plans

With the release of this special edition album, Coons hopes to capture the attention of fans, old and new. The album, available for digital download, offers a unique blend of CMC music spanning a decade. Looking ahead, Coons remains open to new projects, tours, and collaborations. “It’s up to the Universe and the good Lord above,” he concludes.
