On March 20, 2026, the Spring Equinox, renowned pianist Kong Xiangdong will return to the Shanghai Concert Hall, the very venue where his musical journey began forty years ago. This time, he returns not for a commercial performance, but for a fully public welfare concert, offering free admission to the people of Shanghai.

The concert is part of the main program of the 41st Shanghai Spring International Music Festival. By making it freely accessible, the event aims to turn decades of musical legacy into a shared cultural memory for the city.

A Full Circle: Kong Xiangdong’s Journey from Shanghai to the World and Back

“For me, the Shanghai Concert Hall has never been just a building. Returning here after forty years feels like a conversation with my younger self, and a tribute to this city,” says Kong Xiangdong.

A globally celebrated pianist, Kong has won top prizes at major international competitions and performed at prestigious venues including New York’s Lincoln Center and Vienna’s Musikverein. Critics have recognized him as one of the most accomplished Chinese pianists of his generation, praised for his ability to blend technical precision with deep emotional expression. Now, he returns to his artistic birthplace, reaffirming his commitment to his roots.

Three Roles, One Vision: Pianist, Educator, Public Welfare Advocate

In 2025, Kong Xiangdong was appointed Professor at Large at NYU Shanghai, marking a new chapter in his career. This role allows him to contribute to Sino-foreign cultural exchange and mentor young artistic talent. “The younger generation needs guidance, and I want to be that bridge,” he says.

Beyond his artistic and educational pursuits, public welfare has always been central to Kong’s work. Since returning to China in 1997, he has been deeply involved in music education and charitable initiatives. He founded the Kong Xiangdong Music Institution, launched the “Sunshine Music Initiative,” taught blind children to play the piano, and organized benefit concerts. He also established a music therapy studio at the Children’s Hospital of Fudan University and brought music programs to remote mountain schools.

For this concert, Kong has invited ten girls from the Ethnic Unity Demonstration Class in Yunnan, participants in the AIA “AIA with Love” public welfare project, to perform on stage. It will be their first time singing at a professional concert hall, transforming public welfare from a concept into a tangible, memorable experience.

“Over the past forty years, the Shanghai audience has been my greatest support. Offering free tickets for this concert is my way of giving back to the city,” says Kong.

A Unique Collaboration: NYU Shanghai and AIA Join Forces

As a hub for multicultural education, NYU Shanghai’s collaboration with Kong Xiangdong brings fresh energy and educational depth to the music festival. Professor David Atwill, Dean of Arts and Sciences at NYU Shanghai, comments: “This concert represents a perfect blend of cross-cultural education and artistic public welfare. Mr. Kong is not only a world-class pianist but also our honorary professor. His journey, from Shanghai to the world and back, offers students inspiration beyond music and adds unique educational value to this event.”

AIA serves as the title sponsor of the concert, marking the third consecutive year of partnership. Over the past three years, AIA and Kong have co-organized concerts, masterclasses, and music therapy sessions as part of a growing commitment to aesthetic education and community engagement.

Mr. Zhang Min, Deputy General Manager, Chief Customer Officer and Chief Healthcare Officer of AIA Life Insurance Company Limited, explains: “Three years ago, AIA began building a platform for aesthetic education. We believe that true cultural enrichment takes time. Through our partnership with Mr. Kong and professional institutions, we have brought high-quality artistic experiences to the public.”

The March 20 concert marks a rare convergence of artistry, education, and public service. For Kong Xiangdong, it represents both a homecoming and a continuation of his belief that music belongs to everyone.
