Innovation and Excellence: Avery Tarasov’s Path In The Cybersecurity Domain

Cybersecurity is becoming an essential concern in today’s world, where we are all reliant on the internet and associated information technology. In the evolving digital age, individuals are using the internet for literally everything: online banking and finance, shopping, work, research, news, social media, and entertainment. Unfortunately, cyber threats such as hacking, phishing, identity theft, and ransomware have grown in parallel with our dependence on the internet and computer systems. It has become critical that individuals and businesses take steps to keep their digital information secure and protected.

The consequences of a cybersecurity breach can be severe, ranging from financial loss to operational and reputational damage, and possible associated legal liability. With the pandemic helping to establish remote work as a norm, and the sheer volume of data and communication making cloud dependence increasingly prevalent, new potential attacking opportunities for cybercriminals have proliferated. As a consequence, cybersecurity has become even more critical than in past years. Cybersecurity is now an essential component of risk management for organizations of all sizes, across every industry.  Avery Tarasov has devoted his career to the pursuit of cybersecurity and has made a name for himself in the industry as an innovator and entrepreneur.

Avery Tarasov holds the Certified Information Systems Security Profession (CISSP) credential.  He earned a master’s degree in Information Systems and Technology Management from Capella University, with a specialization in Information Assurance and Security, a program accredited by the National Security Agency (NSA) as a Center of Academic Excellence in cybersecurity.

From an early age, Avery Tarasov developed an interest in computers and programming, leading him to start developing Windows system utilities in Visual Basic 6 and C++ during his junior high and high school years. As a professional, he has accumulated 18 years of work experience in the IT and cybersecurity fields, with the bulk of that time spent in cybersecurity. He has nearly a decade of experience in cybersecurity management, with a primary focus on threat hunting. Notably, he made a significant contribution to the development of open-source 369 Snort intrusion detection system rules and was recognized as a top contributor to this cybersecurity resource between 2012 and 2015. His name has appeared on over 180 unique URLs on the related blog.snort.org.

Tarasov’s work history includes positions with E*TRADE Financial, Microsoft, Avon, KIND, and Wafra. His entrepreneurial ventures include the successful Laser Pointer Forums, a laser discussion forum for professionals and enthusiasts that boasts over 43,000 registered members who have contributed in excess of 1.2 million posts.

More recently, Tarasov founded the cybersecurity firm DeepTide LLC, which has just released its first major product: ArcticMyst Security, an open-source Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) tool designed for Windows. This freeware tool includes options for enhanced, fee-based threat hunting, crash analysis, and training services. The Threat Hunting Service can utilize ArcticMyst Security or Microsoft Defender/Sentinel.  ArcticMyst also can be used for Crash Detection services provided by DeepTide.  Utilizing “dump file” monitoring, this option will help organizations and individuals detect potentially silent background crashes occurring in their IT environment. Many neglect this potential IT system vulnerability,  which may prove critical if a security tool crash goes undetected, a  system vulnerable to attack. Finally, DeepTide offers training in a host of important domains, including C/C++, Windows API, FreeBasic, Regular Expressions/PCRE regex pattern matching, and Kusto Query Language (KQL). This training can equip individuals and organizations with the knowledge and skills needed to develop and implement a variety of effective cybersecurity strategies customized to their needs.

The threat of criminal cyberattacks continues to grow, and the cybersecurity field is advancing to counter this trend. Cybersecurity no longer is an option; it is a necessity. Safeguarding one’s digital assets has become a near-universal top priority. Pathbreakers like Avery Tarasov are on a mission to continually innovate cybersecurity solutions for an ever-changing threat landscape, a mission that has become essential for the functioning of our global society.
