Yingxuan Dan’s ‘Distorted Waves’ – A Fusion of Music & Design

By: Elena Mart

Flowing Space, East Village’s innovative art and cultural space, announces “Distorted Waves,” a solo exhibition by acclaimed graphic designer and music visualizer Yingxuan Dan (Eilis), running from July 18th to July 27th, 2025. The exhibition presents an immersive exploration of music visualization through design, featuring Dan’s London Design Award-winning work alongside an extensive collection of projects deeply connected to the music industry.

At the heart of the exhibition stands “Interstellar Enigma – Egoism of Stars,” Dan’s Silver Award-winning project from the 2024 London Design Awards. Inspired by Daft Punk’s “Veridis Quo,” this piece masterfully combines outer space elements with futuristic aesthetics, exploring themes of the unknown, transcendence, and artistic purpose. The design employs a deep black and blue palette, evoking both serenity and mystery—an aesthetic reflection of the track’s contemplative nature.

A Deep Connection Between Music & Design

For Dan, music has always been more than just inspiration—it is an essential part of her creative identity. Her journey into music visualization began during her time at Boston University, where she earned her Master’s degree in Graphic Design in 2023. Fascinated by the interplay between sound and visuals, she developed an approach that blends experimental aesthetics with the emotional depth of music.

Her work has since gained recognition across major music labels and independent collectives alike. At Warner Music Group, she contributed to high-profile music campaigns and visual storytelling projects, working closely with artists across genres. During her time at 300 Entertainment, she focused on hip-hop and rap-oriented designs, collaborating on promotional materials and branding for emerging talents in the industry.

Beyond major labels, Dan has formed long-standing collaborations with independent musicians, most notably New York’s experimental music label Byebyetechno. Through this partnership, she has designed album covers, tour visuals, and branding materials, bridging the gap between underground music culture and contemporary visual design.

Additionally, she has worked with musicians from Berklee College of Music, crafting album artwork, concert posters, and personal branding materials for a range of artists spanning jazz, classical, R&B, and electronic music. Her ability to translate sonic experiences into compelling visuals has made her a sought-after creative force in the music industry.

An Immersive Exhibition Experience

The exhibition space at Flowing Space will be transformed into a semi-immersive environment, allowing visitors to witness the fusion of music and design firsthand. Featuring an eclectic mix of rock, hip-hop, electronic, and classical elements, the exhibition highlights how different musical styles can be translated into visual forms while maintaining a cohesive artistic language.

Exhibition highlights include:

Experimental poster designs that visually dissect sound structures
Album artwork installations that reinterpret classic and contemporary music aesthetics
Video projections and interactive elements, where sound and imagery converge

Dan’s passion for music-driven design extends beyond static visuals. Visitors may engage with her creative process through workshop sessions, exploring how she translates musical rhythms and emotional undertones into visual compositions. These workshops will provide a hands-on experience in music visualization, offering insight into the intricate relationship between graphic design and sound.

Bridging Art & Music in Everyday Life

“Distorted Waves” embodies Flowing Space’s mission of integrating art into daily life, presenting design not just as a visual medium, but as a bridge between different artistic expressions. Through this exhibition, Dan invites visitors to immerse themselves in a world where music and design intertwine, creating a deeply emotional and multisensory experience.

Whether through the intricate compositions of a jazz improvisation, the raw energy of rock, or the hypnotic pulses of techno, “Distorted Waves” explores the boundless ways in which music and design shape our perception of the world.
