Sam Welch Spreads Hope with New Single “The Attic”

By: Paul K. Barnes

Sam Welch released his project The Republic in 2024, and now he’s back with a new album titled The Attic. This album continues some of the themes from the previous one, such as spiritual transcendence, but also expands on them by exploring healing and resolution. The album’s title track builds on the imagery-based lyricism Sam is known for writing.

“For this song, I was thinking of the attic in my Grandmother’s house and how I saw it as a kid. It had all sorts of strange artifacts. I was also thinking of a yard sale and how we’re sort of God’s equipment that He found at a yard sale. He’s taking us from one place to the next and using us how He sees fit. We may have gathered dust over time, but to Him we still have worth and value,” he shared.

The theme of hope is central to the track’s message, something Sam wants to convey through the song. By sharing the track, he hopes others might find hope in their purpose in life and for the future in general. In fact, maintaining hope is a key message that runs through the entire album.

As mentioned earlier, the album also addresses healing and resolution, themes that directly reflect Sam’s personal experiences during the creation of the album.

“I went through a lot of personal challenges this year. But I wanted to talk about how I maintained faith throughout the healing process. My cat had some medical issues, but she’s okay now. I’ve had tinnitus since I was about 20, but recently it became much more intense,” he said.

“I was able to get hearing aids, which made a significant difference in improving my hearing. They really helped me regain a sense of normalcy. I also see the future as a source of healing for that as well. So, the themes of healing, regeneration, and hope were consistent throughout those experiences, and I translated them into the album,” he shared.

Due to these factors, the creation of The Attic took longer than usual, but Sam doesn’t view this as a negative. In fact, he sees it in a more positive light.

“I’m very pleased to have finally finished this album. Completing it showed me that I can still do this. It demonstrated that my creative impulses are still intact despite the challenges I’ve faced. I can still produce music and continue to expand my musical catalog,” he said.

Sam also shared that by using the TC Helicon vocal doubling system, he’s been able to enhance the strength of the vocal harmonies in his music. In addition to improving this technique, he has continued to explore the spiritual themes mentioned earlier. For one song in particular, he took it in a specific direction.

“I like to think of one of my previous singles, titled Jerusalem, as a Christian Rock anthem,” he said.

As Sam produces his own music, he is deeply involved in every step of the process. This has become increasingly common in the music industry, as many artists enjoy crafting and experiencing every aspect of their music. “One of my favorite things about making music is the way it takes shape and becomes its own entity. I love the unpredictability of the creative process because you never know what’s going to emerge once you get in the studio,” he explained.

Sam Welch has been creating music for years and plans to continue doing so. For him, the experience of hearing the final version of a song is rewarding and fulfilling. This sense of fulfillment grows even more when others can hear the music and feel inspired by it.

Naturally, with Sam writing music from a communal standpoint and with healing in mind, especially for this album, knowing others are inspired by his work is deeply fulfilling.

“It’s gratifying to know that my music is out there, being heard, and shared by people,” he said.
