From the grooves of classic R&B to the influence of rock, funk, and soul, Billy Ray Rock has built his career on authenticity, perseverance, and belief in his own creative vision. An independent artist who writes, produces, and performs his own music, he’s weathered the highs and lows of the music industry while staying committed to creating songs that celebrate resilience, gratitude, and the simple joys of everyday life. Following the release of his single, “I’m Happy,” Billy Ray Rock joins us to reflect on his musical influences, the challenges of forging an independent path, the legacy he hopes to leave for his family, and what’s ahead as he prepares for a new chapter of touring and new music.
For listeners just discovering Billy Ray Rock, tell us about your musical journey and what first inspired you to pursue R&B?
Billy Ray Rock: Mostly Earth, Wind, and Fire, Prince, and classic rock artists like the Moody Blues. There were some 80s acts that helped form my euphoric tendencies with regard to my courses and things like that. Of course, you couldn’t help but be influenced by Parliament and Rick James.
Every artist has challenges. What obstacles have you had to overcome to get where you are today?
BRR: One of the obstacles that was tough to get beyond is the feeling that no matter how strong you think a song is, there are industry types. They can be biased towards other artists, based mostly on how much money and influence others who are endorsing them have. They’re being given more exposure, not necessarily because the song or their songs or their talent is strong, but because others stand to profit more from what they do than what I do. The challenge is to believe in what I do enough to fuel my motivation to continue to create, because knowing you’re up against a machine like that can be discouraging.
Looking back, what accomplishment in your career has meant a lot to you so far?
BRR: What has meant a lot to me so far in terms of accomplishments has been, honestly, the quality and volume of material that I have been able to put together, both in terms of audio tracks and music videos. The creation and expression of my art in volume and quality has been what I feel is my significant accomplishment. Awards are nice to have, but just to have gotten this far, so my kids can, from time to time, pull out a song of mine and appreciate something that their dad did, I think it’s meaningful. I only hope that when they get older, and they listen to a song of mine, I come to mind. At the same time, I hope they think of their late mom because she played an equal, if not bigger, part in their upbringing to help form them into, hopefully, successful and decent, more than decent, people as they grow up.
Your new single is called “I’m Happy.” What inspired you to write such an uplifting song?
BRR: I wrote that song a few years ago when, in fact, I was happy. I’ve been through a lot of peaks and valleys in my life, and I knew that, although I was emotionally happy with my late wife prior to her cancer diagnosis, I knew that the lows would be very low. I didn’t know it would get low enough to have to fathom the idea of losing her, but I knew that things would get low as they sometimes do. I felt like, rather than march around telling people, you should just enjoy life and be happy and embrace the positive blessings, I wanted a song that spoke to that, and I knew I didn’t have one, so I wrote it. It was partially inspired by the Pharrell Williams song, but I just wanted to encapsulate the emotion that I was feeling at the time.
The song celebrates everyday victories rather than extravagant success. Was that an intentional message?
BRR: The meaning of the song is to have 3 1/2 minutes of counting your positive blessings. Just be happy, because you have to enjoy every minute in life, because you never know when or if the next great minute is going to come.
What’s next for Billy Ray Rock, and what can fans expect in the coming months?
BRR: I will likely release another single in the next month or so. I will be on tour in Hawaii and, considering the response to my song “I’m Happy” overseas, especially, I will be in the UK doing some tour dates on the “Four Fingers Get Up” Tour, including one tour stop that I’m doing in Wenatchee, Washington, July 17 and 18th 2026.
