Don Equis, a Bolivian-American artist, has been part of the dynamic group International ZETAS, contributing to their unique sound and energy in the evolving music industry. Their anthemic hits, including the hauntingly beautiful ‘Rose’ and the infectious ‘Baby ReBomba,’ not only soared to the pinnacle of the Bolivia Music charts but also garnered them prestigious accolades and a multitude of nominations for the revered Bolivia Music Awards. Yet, as the clock struck the dawn of 2024, a storm brewed on the horizon for Equis and his ensemble. Their path became riddled with failed collaborations and a bewildering pivot toward the pulsating realm of house music. This tumultuous shift shattered the bonds of creativity and ultimately tore the group apart.
A Rollercoaster Career
Don Equis has been an enigmatic figure in the Bolivian music industry since the mid-2010s. Still, it wasn’t until 2021, alongside Yo Me Llamo contestant Jose Mauricio Siles and their group International ZETAS, that he truly made his mark internationally. Their hit single ‘Rose’ catapulted them to the top of the Bolivia Music chart, marking the group’s first #1 hit. They continued their success with ‘Baby ReBomba,’ dominating the national hit parade for eight weeks and earning nominations at the 2023 Bolivia Music Awards.
At the 2023 BMAs, the atmosphere was vibrant, and anticipation filled the room as ZETAS competed against the urban band New Blood Creew. Equis appeared visibly disappointed after the announcement, reflecting the moment’s intensity. “It’s disappointing when genuine talent doesn’t get the recognition it deserves,” he remarked, shaking his head. While the audience cheered for the rap group, who Equis thought was nothing more than a knockoff of La Paz rapper Yarit, he stood steadfast in believing that true talent should shine above the chaos. Despite the loss, he vowed to continue creating music that resonated with authenticity rather than succumbing to the whims of fleeting trends.
A Year of Challenges
2024, however, painted a different picture for Equis and International ZETAS. The year started with promise, with the group achieving another #1 hit in Bolivia. Yet, it quickly spiraled into what Equis describes as his worst career year. Changes in musical direction and collaboration challenges, including work with BMA-nominated producer Whitehouse and artist Mariana Massiel, created obstacles for International ZETAS. Additionally, financial difficulties and internal issues added to the group’s struggles. Eventually, Equis decided to leave the Bolivian music scene and return to the United States.
A New Beginning
Despite the setbacks, Don Equis is not one to be kept down for long. His return to the United States began his English music project, Hot Amaretto. Yet, rumors quickly circulated that Equis’s departure from Bolivia might have been a strategic move rather than a permanent exit. Indeed, Equis had another ace up his sleeve: La Mega Orquesta del Don Equis! With the track ‘Sin Tu Amor,’ the group topped the Spotify charts in Bolivia and abroad!
Looking Ahead
The music industry is watching closely as Don Equis prepares for what could be the significant comeback of his career. With plans to release music in both Spanish and English, Equis is poised to bridge cultural divides and appeal to a global audience. His ability to bounce back from adversity and adapt to the ever-changing musical landscape speaks to his resilience and dedication to his craft.
As 2025 approaches, Don Equis and his production company, Equis Pro, are preparing for the next phase of their musical journey. Many are curious how his evolving creative direction will shape his future projects. With a history of successful releases and a focus on innovation and collaboration, his next steps in the industry will be closely watched.
