Sometimes the most exciting moments in life come with just as much uncertainty. Whether it’s starting a relationship, moving somewhere new, or taking a chance on something you’ve wanted for years, there’s often a little fear mixed in with the excitement. For Austin-based alternative rock trio Dose Rose, that complicated feeling sits at the heart of their latest single, “The Ending.”
Blending the energy of 90s and early 2000s alternative rock with grunge influences and pop melodies, Dose Rose have built their sound around the idea that music should reflect both the good and difficult parts of life. Their attitude is refreshingly straightforward: life can be hard, so it’s worth finding enjoyment wherever possible.
The band consists of Riley Huffman on lead vocals and bass, Vinny Greene on guitar and vocals, and John Sadler on drums. Their story began in Bloomington, Indiana, in early 2020, just weeks before the pandemic brought live music to a standstill.
It wasn’t exactly the easiest introduction to being a band. After an unexpected hiatus, the three musicians eventually reunited and began working their way into a music scene still recovering from the shutdowns. Over the following years, they established themselves within Indiana’s rock community, gradually expanding their performances beyond the state before relocating to Austin, Texas.
Along the way, Dose Rose have embraced just about every opportunity to perform. Their shows have taken them from established music venues to tiny basements, with some particularly unusual appearances at gymnastics centers, underground MMA events and abandoned churches.
That willingness to make things happen independently has become an important part of their identity. Without relying on a label or agency, the trio has spent more than six years managing their own music career, building connections and developing their sound.
Their influences range from Foo Fighters, Paramore and Jimmy Eat World to artists across completely different genres, helping explain the balance of rock energy and melodic songwriting found in their music.
With “The Ending,” however, the focus turns towards something more personal.
The single explores the beginning of a relationship after a long period of waiting for two people to finally get together. There’s excitement, passion, and the feeling that something you’ve wanted for so long is finally happening.
But rather than presenting that moment as uncomplicated happiness, Dose Rose explores the insecurities that can come with it.
The song captures the fear of ruining something good because of your own shortcomings, especially when the relationship means so much that the possibility of losing it is hard to ignore.
It’s a relatable perspective that gives the track an emotional edge, allowing the excitement of new love to exist alongside self-doubt.
The band has described “The Ending” as their favorite song they’ve released so far, written during a period of significant change in their lives.
That makes its arrival especially fitting.
Their previous project, What if I, represented the closing chapter of their time in Indiana, bringing together years of songwriting and musical development. Now, “The Ending” introduces the next stage of their journey, leading towards their upcoming EP, The Ending; The Beginning, scheduled for December 2026.
For Dose Rose, the title feels particularly appropriate. After years of unexpected challenges, independent touring and a major relocation, they’re entering a new chapter while holding onto the same three members and the attitude that brought them together.
And with “The Ending,” they’re showing that sometimes the beginning of something wonderful can be just as frightening as the thought of it ending.
