East Meets West: Payso and Frequency’s Journey from Diverse Backgrounds to Chart-Topping Hits

Meet the dynamic musical duo Payso and Frequency. These two talented artists, both producers in their own right, hail from vastly different backgrounds but came together several years ago to embark on a remarkable journey of music creation.

Frequency’s journey began on the streets of Philadelphia, where he was born and raised, and he later made a home in New Jersey. Music found him at a young age when he was captivated by the film “Drumline,” starring Nick Cannon. The movie’s unique musical performances, characterized by different sounds and intricate patterns, sparked his fascination with music. He embarked on his musical journey by creating R&B compositions. Another significant influence on his path was the legendary Jay-Z, a fellow East Coast native renowned for his relentless hustle and determination.

In contrast, Payso’s roots trace back to parents who were born and raised in Mexico before making their way to California. Growing up in the vibrant coastal city of Huntington Beach, he developed a profound passion for music. His exposure to mainstream electronic music ignited his curiosity, leading him to explore the works of various DJs and even delve into pop music. It wasn’t long before Payso began crafting his unique blend of electronic music, hip-hop, and many other genres. One of his most significant inspirations was the iconic Skrillex, whose distinctive style left an indelible mark on his musical journey. Eight years ago, Payso took a bold step and relocated to Los Angeles, fueled by his dreams of pursuing music. His parents’ unwavering support, motivation, and indomitable spirit were instrumental in turning his musical aspirations into a reality.

The paths of Payso and Frequency serendipitously converged at a music house in Burbank, a vibrant creative hub where diverse musical talents gathered to collaborate and network. During this period, Frequency worked alongside the talented Jordin Sparks, who entrusted him with vocals to craft a dance record. He brought the project to his musical partners, one of whom was Payso. Their collaboration resulted in the hit track “This Feeling Remix,” marking the inception of their fruitful musical partnership.

Payso and Frequency have since created chart-topping hits, with a personal favorite being the acclaimed “Florida Water.” Their collaborative endeavors have extended to collaborations with notable artists such as Danny Towers and Ski Mask The Slump God. While they have achieved remarkable success as a duo, Payso and Frequency continue nurturing their separate artistic identities. Frequency, for instance, is currently working on an EP titled “Annalea,” featuring guest appearances by prominent artists such as Romeo, Jordin Sparks, French Montana, and D-Smoke. This EP serves as a heartfelt dedication to his grandmother. On the other hand, Payso, influenced by his heritage, collaborates extensively with Latin artists, a theme that will be prominently featured in his upcoming EP titled “Los Hollywood.”

Venturing through the intricate landscape of the music industry, especially as independent artists, presents its fair share of challenges. Payso and Frequency acknowledge the presence of disingenuous individuals within the industry, individuals who often make hollow promises. In response, Payso emphasizes the importance of patience and humility as indispensable qualities to maintain amidst the music industry’s dynamic and sometimes unpredictable environment.

Throughout their careers, they’ve had funny and embarrassing moments, such as falling asleep in the middle of a session or completely losing an entire song from a compromised session on Protools.

Finding your way through Hollywood can be tough, especially when pursuing everything independently. One of the main things they pointed out was the consistently disingenuous people they encountered. While the city is full of people giving out false promises, Payso says it’s important to remain “patient and humble.”

What’s some advice you have for the readers?

Frequency: “Keep working, work hard, and don’t take no for an answer! Just keep thriving and stay in the faith; follow your heart.”

From an independent artist standpoint, Payso says, “Do what you do to make ends meet and eventually you’ll stumble into something. You’ll get that opportunity to excel.”
