“Export Quality”: Unveiling the Resilience of Filipina Mail-Order Brides

The theatre stage often becomes a medium to unveil hidden narratives, and “Export Quality” is a profound example of this artistry. Conceived meticulously by playwrights Erica Miguel, Carolyn Antonio, and Dorotea Mendoza, and directed by Sonoko Kawhara, this production transcends the bounds of entertainment. It offers a poignant insight into the intricate lives of mail-order brides from the Philippines. Ahead of its performance at HERE Arts Center (145 6th Ave, New York, NY 10013) from December 3 through December 17, 2023, the creators to a moment from rehearsal to discuss “Export Quality.”

The title itself, as elaborated by the playwrights, resonates with the concept of “Export Quality” often stamped on products from the Philippines for global markets. It subtly draws parallels between these brides and marketable goods, challenging societal norms and prompting contemplation about the commodification of women.

“At its core, ‘Export Quality’ delves into the profound struggles of these women. Their stories depict the complex interplay between hope and despair, love and loss, and the omnipresence of gender inequality and stereotypes,” explain the playwrights, encapsulating the thematic essence of the production.

This theatrical expedition goes beyond a mere performance; it stands as a testament to resilience amidst adversity. Its roots lie in the community education initiatives spearheaded by AF3IRM, an organization committed to combatting the trafficking of Filipinas. “Our primary goal has always been to amplify the voices of unheard women, especially Filipinas,” emphasize the creators.

Driven by real-life accounts, the narrative of “Export Quality” offers an intimate glimpse into the lives of mail-order brides. These women are portrayed as multifaceted individuals navigating an industry entrenched in power imbalances and societal biases.

“Gender inequality, stereotypes, and power dynamics form the core fabric of the play.” The production doesn’t just highlight these elements; it contextualizes them within the broader economic landscape of the Philippines, shedding light on the country’s historical struggles influenced by colonialism, gender roles, and opportunities.

The collaborative synergy between the playwrights and the director was a fusion of diverse voices converging into a coherent narrative. “Crafting ‘Export Quality’ was an exhilarating yet challenging process. We merged distinct voices into a layered exploration, challenging conventional narratives, and offering a profound understanding of these women’s lives,” reflects the creative team.

Control, manipulation, and violence constitute stark realities faced by mail-order brides, depicted through their cultural values. The play confronts these adversities while emphasizing the resilience and healing power inherent within communities and storytelling.

Supported by organizations advocating women’s rights and empowerment, “Export Quality” aspires to transcend the realm of theatre. It aims to engage communities, ignite conversations, and drive social change, serving as a catalyst against violence targeting women. “Our aspiration is for the impact of this play to reverberate far beyond the stage,” asserts the creative team.

For audiences, “Export Quality” offers a profound awakening—a heightened awareness, a deeper understanding, and a renewed zeal to challenge societal norms. It’s more than entertainment; it’s a catalyst for societal introspection and collective action.

As the curtains draw to a close, the creators envision a future where the stories shared in “Export Quality” continue to resonate. “We strive for lasting change—a society where these women’s stories not only echo but inspire action,” they affirm. They aspire for ongoing productions, robust community dialogues, and increased resources to combat the systemic violence faced by women.

“Export Quality” stands as a poignant portrayal of resilience, strength, and the often-unheard narratives of Filipina mail-order brides. Through the artistry of theatre, it challenges societal paradigms, amplifies marginalized voices, and beckons audiences to become agents of change in a world where these stories are not just performances but powerful catalysts for societal transformation.
