Launa’ole Celebrates Christmas with Hawaiian Heart and Soul

By: James Brown

Launa’ole’s debut album, A Launa’ole Christmas, brings a much-needed dose of healing, joy, and love. Released on December 6, 2024, this album is far more than just another holiday collection—it is a full-hearted tribute to the people of Lahaina, Hawaii, who are still recovering from the devastating wildfires of 2023. Through their music, Launa’ole seeks to comfort those affected, especially during the holiday season, a time that may be harder than ever.

Launa’ole was formed in 2020, during the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, when Koakane Mattos—who is also part of the Hawaiian group Kuikawa—found himself without the usual bandmates for his music projects. He reached out to Kason Gomes and Brandon Hirata to collaborate, and this new partnership quickly grew into something special. What started as a casual collaboration became a bond that would form the heart of Launa’ole, a band committed to sharing the warmth and beauty of Hawaiian music.

Over the past few years, Launa’ole has evolved from a trio of friends into a powerful ensemble known for its captivating performances and blend of traditional Hawaiian sounds with fresh, dynamic energy. And now, after four years of growth, they have released their debut album, A Launa’ole Christmas. This album, the first of many to come, is a perfect reflection of the band’s mission to spread joy and love, with a special focus on the Lahaina community.

The album features eight tracks that beautifully capture the spirit of Christmas. From the upbeat and festive “Mele Kalikimaka ia kākou” (Merry Christmas to Everyone) to the deeply emotional “The Sweetest Gift,” each song brings something unique to the table. A Launa’ole Christmas is filled with beautiful harmonies, soothing guitar, and tropical rhythms, blending traditional Hawaiian music with the magic of the holiday season.

“The Sweetest Gift” is one of the most powerful songs on the album. It’s a moving track that speaks to the pain of losing a loved one, but it also carries a message of hope and peace. The lyrics “You’re with the Son of God, You’re with the Prince of Peace” provide a sense of comfort, reminding listeners that love and connection endure, even in the face of loss. It’s the kind of song that makes you reflect on both the sadness and the peace that comes with accepting the passing of someone you love.

The album also includes classic Christmas tunes but with Launa’ole’s signature Hawaiian twist. “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and “Jingle Bells” take on new life with their tropical sound, while “Christmas Lū’au” adds a playful and joyful energy that makes it feel like a festive celebration from start to finish. Koakane Mattos shared, “This entire album is dedicated to the people of Lahaina to bring hope and joy. We hope that it brings light to their lives, especially during this challenging time.”

Behind the scenes, A Launa’ole Christmas came to life thanks to the expertise of incredible talents. Multi-award-winning producer Dave Tucciarone and engineer Demitri Marmash helped bring the band’s vision to life, ensuring that every track was as perfect as it could be. Their contributions helped shape the album into something that feels both deeply personal and universally uplifting.

Looking to the future, Launa’ole is already excited about what’s next. Kason Gomes shared, “This is just the beginning. We have more music to share, more stories to tell, and more joy to spread.” Their journey is just starting, and A Launa’ole Christmas is only the first chapter in what promises to be a long and impactful career.

But for now, Launa’ole is focused on sharing their debut album with the world. A Launa’ole Christmas is available now on all major streaming platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube. If you’re looking for something fresh to add to your holiday playlist, this album is a must-listen.
