Lauren Cassidy knows that two completely opposite feelings can exist at the same time. You can love somebody and know you need to leave them. You can miss what you had while understanding that going back isn’t right. And sometimes, moving forward doesn’t require pretending the past meant nothing.
That complicated middle ground sits behind “Two Things,” but for Cassidy, the song also feels like part of a much bigger period of moving forward.
The 27-year-old indie-pop artist grew up in New York before making Utah her home, bringing years of songwriting and performance experience into a project that has increasingly become about connection. Her background stretches back to musical theatre and writing songs as a teenager, eventually developing into the artist and online community she has built today.
That community has become a significant part of Cassidy’s story. With an audience of more than 450,000 across social media and over 2,000 members within her Healing Garden community, her music exists alongside a space built around honesty, growth, and finding other people who understand what you’re going through.
“Two Things” fits naturally into that world. The song was inspired by something Cassidy encountered through therapy: the idea that two things can be true at once. After experiencing a toxic relationship, that thought offered another way of looking at the conflicting emotions that can remain after something ends.
Rather than turning the experience into a straightforward heartbreak song, Cassidy focuses on self-trust. Loving someone doesn’t automatically mean they’re right for you, and choosing yourself doesn’t erase the feelings that existed beforehand. “Two Things” allows both realities to sit beside each other.
Importantly, though, the song isn’t designed to leave listeners stuck in sadness. There’s an empowering quality to it too. Cassidy wanted something people could connect with emotionally while still being able to dance, turning a difficult realization into a moment of release.
That balance arrives during a renewed period of creativity for the artist.
After releasing “Outside” in 2023, Cassidy stepped away from releasing music for around three years. She returned in March 2026 with “Lessons,” which went on to surpass 54,000 streams, before following it with “I’d Give Her the World” in May. “Two Things” continues that run, adding another perspective to a catalog increasingly shaped by everything Cassidy has learned during the years between releases.
Her return isn’t limited to streaming either. Cassidy is set to headline The Rise in Provo on September 26, bringing this latest chapter onto the stage after previous experience performing at festivals and opening shows around Utah.
For Cassidy, “Two Things” isn’t about having every emotion neatly figured out. It’s about recognising that conflicting feelings don’t have to cancel each other out.
You can remember someone fondly and still leave. You can hurt and still dance. And, perhaps most importantly, you can love somebody while finally choosing yourself.
