Moissanite vs Diamond – a Worthy Diamond Alternative

Many people often confuse moissanite with diamond. Well, moissanite is a synthetic gemstone that looks like a diamond, but it is not the same thing as a diamond. It has many of the same characteristics and uses as diamonds. However, it does not have the qualities and features of natural diamonds as discussed here: https://www.moissaniteco.com/moissanite-vs-diamond.

So what is the difference between Moissanite and diamonds? What makes them different from each other? Moissanite is a form of synthetic gemstone that has high brilliance and fire. A French physicist Henri Moissan discovered moissanite in 1879. Later on, researchers found this stone to comprise Silicon Carbide (SiC) and since then, people manufacture it in the laboratories.

Diamond and Emerging Alternatives

Diamonds are natural stones composed mostly of carbon atoms arranged in a crystal lattice structure. They are also gemstones because they are precious. The first known use of diamond dates back to 5000 BC when Egyptians used it for rings and earrings. In ancient times, diamonds were magical and mystical. In fact, people believed that diamonds brought good luck and prosperity.

For a long period, diamonds were only available to royalty and rich people. However, in the last few centuries, their popularity increased tremendously. Today, almost everyone owns at least one piece of jewelry made out of diamonds. However, there are alternatives to diamonds that can give you similar results. One of them is moissanite.

How does Moissanite Compare to Diamond?

Due to their close resemblance, diamond and moissanite confuse many people. This is especially if they have not taken the time to study their differences. So let us look at the differences between these two gems:

· Hardness

The main difference between diamonds and moissanite is that moissanite has higher hardness than diamonds. This means that moissanite is harder than diamonds. So if you want something that will look and feel just like a real diamond, go for moissanite. If you want something that is more durable and lasts longer, choose diamond.

· Colors

Both moissanite and diamonds come in various colors. For instance, diamonds are usually white, yellow, brown, blue, pink, red, green, orange, purple, or black. On the other hand, moissanite comes in shades such as light gray, dark gray, rose gold, silver, gold, platinum, or even white. You can find moissanite in any color you want.

· Clarity

Both Moissanite and diamonds are clear. They do not contain any imperfections or flaws. However, moissanite is much clearer than diamonds. That is why moissanite is preferred over diamonds by most jewelers.

· Luster

These two gemstones have good brightness and a shiny look. However, improved manufacturing processes make moissanite have more luster than diamonds. Therefore, moissanite tends to have a little more fire and brilliance than natural diamonds.

· Weight

Diamonds weigh about 0.3 grams per carat, while moissanite weighs around 0.2 grams per carat. This means that moissonite is lighter than diamonds. In that case, moissanite is your choice for lightweight applications and use.

· Cutting

Determining how well a stone cut is very important. When you buy a diamond, you need to know whether the cut is good or poor. With moissanite, you do not need to worry about this. Since moissanite looks so similar to diamonds, you will not notice any difference in its cutting.

· Durability

Moissanite is more durable than diamonds. This is due to its superior quality. It does not scratch easily, and it does not break easily either. As a result, moissanite is less likely to lose its value compared to diamonds. For that reason, it is something to consider when choosing between moissanite and diamond.

· Price

Diamonds are expensive. In addition, since they are rare, they tend to cost a lot of money. On the other hand, moissanite is affordable. It costs less than half of what a diamond would cost. Most importantly, it gives you diamond-like properties at an affordable cost.

So which gemstone should you prefer? Well, both moissanite and diamonds can do wonders for your appearance. Both of them are great choices. However, when it comes to durability at an affordable cost, Moissanite is better. Therefore, if you want something with a long lifespan and high resistance to scratching, then opt for moissanite. Otherwise, if you want something flashy and sparkly, then go for diamonds.
