Shannon K, the talented songstress known for her soulful voice and emotive lyrics, has teamed up with her legendary father, Kumar Sanu, the Bollywood Superstar, known also for his philanthropic endeavors, to deliver their latest hit, “9 to 5.” This captivating track is more than just a melody; it’s an anthem for modern workers, highlighting the balance between daily grind and pursuing one’s passions.
Shannon explains the song’s inspiration: “The concept of discussing the 9 to 5 routine is still incredibly relevant today. Through our song, I hope listeners feel inspired to break free from their comfort zones and follow their passions.”
Working closely with her sister Annabelle Sanu, Shannon drew creative inspiration from Dolly Parton’s iconic ’80s anthem “9 to 5,” which addressed workplace issues and women’s roles in business. “We wanted to create something that resonates with our lives today, reflecting on how the work-life dynamic has evolved,” Shannon shares.

For those new to Shannon K her impressive repertoire features the HMMA Award-winning “Give Me Your Hand,” an anti-bullying anthem co-written with her sister Annabelle. Her collaborations span artists such as Sonu Nigam and Kyle Townsend. Transitioning into acting, she has appeared in productions like “The Big Feed,” “Mystical Inheritance of Adina Hassan,” and “Chal Zindagi.” Her diverse discography, including tracks like “Sapphire,” “Lately,” “Always,” and “Run,” highlights her unique fusion of pop, soul, and R&B.
This new track “9 to 5” is a collaboration with her father bringing them back together after seven years in a way that is both nostalgic and heartwarming. “Convincing Dad to sing a few lines in English was memorable. He was hesitant, but we really got him excited about it,” Shannon recalls.
Shannon believes in music’s powerful impact on people’s views on work-life balance. “Music is an escape from our chaotic lives,” she laments. “We wanted to remind people to live their lives fully and enjoy every moment.”
Reflecting on the song’s deeper meaning, Shannon adds, “We aimed to highlight how modern lifestyles can trap us in routines, preventing us from truly enjoying life.”

Blending contemporary sounds with her father’s timeless style was essential for creating the perfect harmony. “Dad’s soulful voice added magic to the mid-tempo beat,” Shannon says.
The emotional journey of creating “9 to 5” reminded Shannon of the importance of enjoying life’s small pleasures. “We often get so caught up in work and competition that we forget to appreciate the little joys.”
Introducing new musical elements, Shannon incorporated a Latin house sound by Lugo González into the track. “Initially, it sounds like a dance song, but the lyrics reveal a deeper story,” she notes.
“9 to 5” captures the essence of love and support across generations. “We wanted to encourage people to pursue their dreams despite having set lifestyles. The positive feedback shows that many relate to the song,” Shannon says.
Looking ahead, Shannon promises more exciting projects. “There are many songs in the pipeline, exploring new genres. I’m excited to see where this journey takes me!”
