Why Meredith Sand Designs Is Creating a New Model for Local Art Galleries Through Artist Residencies and Immersive Exhibitions
For many people, visiting an art gallery can feel like a passive experience. You walk through a space, admire the artwork, and leave. Meredith Sand Designs has come up with something different.
Based in Orlando’s Milk District, Meredith Sand Designs Studio and Gallery has created a space that is more than a place to admire art. It enables visitors to meet the artists, attend events, engage with themed exhibits, and participate in the creation process. The gallery is both an exhibition facility, an artist’s studio, a meeting place, and a residence program for the artists.
Meredith believes that art needs to be made more accessible and relatable; the studio is hence a place of creativity, engagement, and interaction. Instead of treating exhibitions as isolated displays, the space creates ongoing opportunities for conversation, discovery, and participation.
This approach gives Meredith Sand Designs a distinctive place in Orlando’s growing arts scene.
Experiences That Go Beyond Traditional Gallery Walls
Meredith Sand Designs began as a creative business centered on Meredith Sand’s hand-stamped stationery and design work. What would become Meredith Sand Designs began with custom cards before expanding to include textile work, gifts, and a gallery in Orlando.
Today, the business offers several interconnected experiences, including rotating artist residency programs, solo exhibitions, gallery installations, original artwork and prints, hand-stamped textiles and gifts, workshops and creative events, community gatherings and receptions, and private event opportunities.
Among the gallery’s highlights is the artist-in-residence program. The new artist residents in the gallery rotate every six weeks or so, ensuring that the gallery is always changing and that visitors can keep coming back month after month.
Recent resident artists include Megan Hernandez (current), David Buckley, Kathleen Safi, Jessica Brackett, Mister Larrie, Beth Murray, Candace (Thompson) Max, Robin Johnson, Sarah Hanna, and many more. This rotating feature keeps the gallery feeling fresh through the artists’ varied styles.
How Artist Residencies Create Deeper Connections
Most galleries concentrate more on exhibiting the finished product. However, Meredith Sand Designs values not only the artwork but also the artists who create it.
The resident artists get the chance to turn the gallery setting according to their perspective. According to Meredith Sand, every residency is a new perspective that invites the viewers to see, feel, and engage with art in unexpected ways.
The current resident artist, Megan Hernandez, serves as an example. Her collection, called Conditions of Closeness, reflects relationships existing in nature. The exhibition delves into topics such as survival, synchronization, dependence, and commonalities through pairs of animals and systems.
She aims to raise the question: “Do we choose intimacy, or are we structured into it?”
This focus on ideas and experience helps create exhibitions that stay with visitors long after they leave the gallery.
Milk Stacks Art Market: Bringing Artists and Community Together
One such event, which showcased the gallery’s community-focused attitude, was the Milk Stacks Art Market. The event united local artists, producers, food vendors, and guests, who were able to browse handmade items, learn about upcoming artists, taste local dishes, and discover one of the city’s most creative districts.
In addition to resident artist Megan Hernandez, the following were present: Angelo the Artiste, Bella Gioia Designs, David Lawrence, Sophia Lucia, Xavier Moss, Phat Ash Bakes, Pink Salamander, and Willie Boys BBQ.
Events like this expand the gallery’s role. Instead of functioning solely as an exhibition venue, Meredith Sand Designs serves as a meeting point for artists, small businesses, collectors, and community members. The experience encouraged people to engage with local creativity in a welcoming environment.
This trend is gaining attention today as people seek cultural experiences that create social interaction and community connection.
A Vision for the Future of Local Galleries
Local galleries that struggle to stay connected to the community would benefit from examining how Meredith Sand Designs operates.
In the same space, the gallery brings together residencies, immersive exhibits, workshops, events, and even an active artist’s studio. The artists get their exposure and the opportunity to showcase their artwork. Visitors get an experience that is personalized and engaging. The community gains a space dedicated to creativity and connection.
By highlighting the artists, engaging them, and regularly updating the exhibits, Meredith Sand Designs has created a gallery concept that goes well beyond conventional expectations.
