Willie McLaughlin : Father Of Sydney McLaughlin

Willie Mclaughlin is a former track and field athlete and basketball player who was an All American in the 400 meters hurdles during his junior year at Rider University. Willie Mclaughlin was one of the five finalists for the “Male Athlete of the Year” award by Sports Illustrated Magazine in 1987 while playing college basketball, He was selected as a District One Academic All American in 1984 and 1985 while participating on the collegiate track team. He was inducted into the Rider University Hall of Fame in 2003.

At just 21 years of age, Willie Mclaughlin became the fifth fastest time holder for the 400 meters hurdles in the world in 1981 with a time of 48.69 seconds at a meet held at Princeton University, New Jersey. That same year he became a member of the United States National Track Team and compet in the Pan Am Games. Willie McLaughlin’s only other worldwide competition was at one of the Olympic Trials where he finished 10th. 

His personal best was 48.69, achieved in 1981. He is one of the few runners to ever run a 48-flat 400 meters hurdles hence In addition, Willie Mclaughlin ranked #2 in the US in the 400 meters hurdles during his senior year at Rider University. He was only the second athlete to break 50 seconds at Rider University.

Sydney Michelle McLaughlin, a black American girl, who hails from Union City, New Jersey (USA), is a junior at Union Catholic Regional High School hence She is now the fastest hurdler in the world during her junior year and at 17 years of age.

Already achieved recognition when she became the first American high school junior girl ever to set a 400 meters hurdles world record with 54.2 seconds, when she won the event of 400 meters hurdles at the New Balance Nationals Outdoor. 

They broke the previous world record of 55.

Held in Boston on June 9, 2016 and cheered by her proud father Willie Mclaughlin which saw this historical event.She is currently a junior at Union Catholic Regional High School with a personal best time of 54:02 which she set at the Penn Relays winning in 2016 and 52.80(2016) at Millrose Games for 800 meters 2017.

Willie Mclaughlin son of Jackson and Robin McLaughlin was born in 1960 in Westbury, New York. He was the fourth of five children. He grew up a Roman Catholic and attended St. John Vianney grade school, graduated from St Joseph’s High School in Metuchen, New Jersey and received his bachelor’s degree at Rider University where he ran sprints for the track team as well as playing basketball on the club level, his first love sport next to baseball.

Willie McLaughlin married Mary McLaughlin on May 12, 1986 and they have two children: 

Sydney Michelle McLaughlin (born February 4, 1995) is a member of the Union Catholic Regional High School and the Union City High School Track Team who has already set a world record by breaking the mark of 55 seconds while running in New York city.

CAREER : 

Willie Mclaughlin was a three-time All-American. The first person to run under 50 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles in the NCAA.

He name to “The Sporting News” All-American Team during his senior year at Rider University and name “Male Athlete of the Year” by Sports Illustrate Magazine for 1987 as a junior.

At age 45, Willie Mclaughlin is a six-time winner of the New York City 400 meters hurdles.

They induct into the Rider University Hall of Fame in 2003.

They won the 400 meters hurdles twice in 1983, using the sectional qualifying round, and was second in 1984. There was a two-time winner of the New York City 400 meters hurdles for his times of 48.65 and 49.3 seconds and also set a personal record of 49.0 seconds at that meet on May 15, 1984 against Felder High School (in New York).

It qualified for the 1984 Olympic Trials but failed to advance to the semi-final round.

Willie Mclaughlin has been coaching track, basketball, baseball and football in Union Catholic Regional High School, New Jersey since 2003 and is a former track athlete himself. He has guided his students to several state titles as well as leading them to be runners-up in many big events throughout the state of New Jersey hence It is credited with helping Sydney McLaughlin in her world record which she set at 54.2 seconds at the New Balance Nationals Outdoor in Boston in June 2016.

He is currently a member of the Union Catholic. Regional High School Athletic Department. Where he coaches track events and is also a teacher. His weekly schedule is usually devote to coaching high school girls’ track, basketball and baseball.
